Joanna Calo is a writer, director, and showrunner.[1] She is known for her work on Hacks, BoJack Horseman, and most recently The Bear, where she worked as executive producer. Joanna become involved with The Bear after receiving the script for the show from her manager, and felt an instant connection to the story.[2]
Her fist paid job in the industry was as an assistant for John Enbom (TV writer) on the NBC show Free Agents, a job she worked for ten years before she had her break as a writer on a show. [3] She's drawn to working on comedic shows because "the idea of helping other people feel joy and see some brightness in the world makes me very happy."[3]
Joanna's writing on episode of BoJack Horseman, titled Brrap Brrap Pew Pew, got attention for confronting taboo topics regarding abortion.[4]
She is currently working on adapting Suburban Hell for Legendary.
Personal Life
Joanna is married with two kids, and lives in Los Angeles, California.[2]
Awards
Joanna has been nominated for a Writer Guilds of America Awards for her writing in BoJack's Horsmean "Ruthie" episode.[5]
She has also been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award, BAFTA Awards, Film Independent Spirit Awards, and PGA Awards.
