Joan Sabaté is a Spanish American physician and nutrition researcher. He is the director of the Center for Nutrition, Healthy Lifestyle, and Disease Prevention, formerly the Loma Linda University School of Public Health, Department of Nutrition (LLU) in California and Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology.[1] His professional focus has been on the impact of plant-based diets on non-communicable diseases.[2]

Research

Sabaté was the first researcher to link the consumption of walnuts to significant reductions in blood serum cholesterol. He conducted a randomized controlled trial from 1990 to 1992 and the findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1993.[3] Subsequent studies have confirmed and established the mechanisms for these outcomes.

He has established the health benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. He led the team that designed the vegetarian food guide pyramid (as seen on the Vegetarian Diet Pyramid page), widely used in vegetarian education. In 2006, he became, and remains, the Chair of the International Congress on Vegetarian Nutrition. Held every five years, this is the primary venue for current and emerging issues on plant-based diets and their health effects. In addition, he has developed an Environmental Nutrition Research program.

Sabaté is a co-investigator on the NIH funded Adventist Health Studies that collected dietary, lifestyle and health information from 96,000 Adventists starting in 2002. Outcomes from this and his other research have generated over 200 peer-reviewed publications.

Public health influence

Sabate is widely recognized as one of the leading authorities to advance our understanding of the health benefits of nuts. His research contributed significantly to the Qualified Health Claims issued by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003 for nuts and for walnuts in 2004.[9] These qualified health claims increased consumer recognition about the health benefits of tree nuts. Subsequently, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans have recommended inclusion of nuts in their featured healthy eating patterns. In addition, the American Heart Association in their 2020 Goals to Reduce Cardiovascular Disease recommended consumption of nuts, legumes and seeds. Sabate's nut research has been widely translated worldwide to dietary recommendations for better health.

He served on the USDA Nutrition Evidence Library Systematic Review Technical Expert Collaborative on Dietary Patterns in support of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. Moreover, he was a member of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, representing the Vegetarian perspective.[10]

Education

In 1977, Sabaté earned a Licenciatura en Medicina (MD) and subsequently a specialty in Internal Medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain. He completed a Doctoral degree in Public Health (DrPH) in Nutrition in 1989 from Loma Linda University in California.
