João José Galaz de Abreu Pimenta ( Lagos , 4 October 1931 [1] ) is a former Portuguese footballer , who played as a defender and midfielder .
He spent most of his career playing for Sporting Clube de Portugal with whom he won two Portuguese Primeira Liga and one Taça Portugal .
Biography
He was born in Lagos in the Algarve region and together with his two brothers Mário and Hélder he begins to play soccer, but he will be the only one to make sport his job. He himself said "For me football has never been a profession, but more a way of life. I practiced it for pure pleasure» [1].

Career
Club
He spent his entire career playing in the Portuguese league, playing for 11 seasons in the Primeira Liga and 3 in the Segunda Liga. He started playing football in a small club in Lagos , Faìsca, in the role of striker before moving on to the Portimonense Sporting Clube|Portimonense youth team where he is instead used as an inside midfielder. At the age of eighteen he was bought in 1949 by Vitória Setúbal where he played for three seasons.
Sporting Clube de Portugal
He was soon noticed by Lisbon's Sporting Clube de Portugal who came into possession of his card in 1953 and immediately placed him in the first team under manager Álvaro Cardoso . He made his debut on 18 October in a 2-2 draw against Sporting Clube da Covilhã|Covilhã and scored his first goal for sporting on 6 December in a 2-1 life match against Boavista Futebol Clube|Boavista. During his first season, despite his young age, he earned a starting position in defense by partnering with Manuel Caldeira , contributing to the victory of the Portuguese Championship and the Portuguese Cup .
During the 1955-56 season, he took part in the first edition of the Champions Cup and was on the field on the historic 4th September 1955, i.e. the first ever match of the Champions Cup which started the European football competitions between clubs, ended with the result 3-3 between Sporting CP and Partizan played at the Estádio Nacional [2]. .
During the 1957-58 Championship he won his second triumph in the Portuguese Championship , which is also the tenth title in the history of Sporting CP . This season, deployed as a defender or midfielder, he will be the most used player collecting 31 appearances.
The return to Vitória Setúbal
In 1960 he returned to play for Vitória Setúbal, a club he belonged to before the 7 seasons he spent with Sporting Clube de Portugal . Here he enjoyed his last three league titles before retiring permanently in 1963. Playing for Vitória Setúbal he contributed to the club's two promotions to the Primeira Liga , the first in 1952 and the second in 1962.
National team
He made 2 appearances for his country both in 1955 in two official friendlies both won by Portugal.
