Jinying Wang (1946—), whose real name is Ren-Hsin Wang and whose early-stage name was Chin-Ying Wang, Kitten, is an actress in the Taiwanese opera. She has appeared in TV dramas on various wireless television stations (Taiwan Television, China Television, and later Da Ai Television, Formosa Television). She is known for her roles opposite Liu Ching, Li-Hua Yang, Hsiang-Lien Huang, Chun-Mei Kuo, Ru-Ling Li, Mei-Yun Tang, Ya-Fen Hsu, Xiaomi, etc. In 2020, the Ministry of Culture designated Jinying Wang an “important preserver of traditional performing arts - Taiwanese opera” - A national treasure artist (a living national treasure).

Life Story

Influenced by her sister Jinlian Wang, Jinying Wang began to learn Taiwanese opera when she was a child. She performed everywhere with a medicine troupe. She later joined Chiayi Public Welfare Radio and became a member of the “Five Tigers Radio Troupe.”[1]

Jinying Wang joined Taichung Mintian Radio when she was 17 years old. She was known by the nickname “Kitten” and made several records.[2] She later transferred to Unicom Radio.

At 22, Jinying Wang followed her sister to meet the Taiwanese opera troupe leader Jon-Yuan Liu and joined the CTV Taiwanese opera troupe. She also changed her stage name to Jinying Wang. At that time, she was as famous as Liu Ching and Tsung-Ming Chen. She also participated in the broadcasting of Taiwanese opera with Ming Pen Broadcasting and Cheng Sheng Broadcasting.

In 1985, Jon-Yuan Liu founded the Heluo Taiwanese Opera Troupe. Jinying Wang joined the troupe and served as the artistic director.

She also served as an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Taiwanese Opera at the National Taiwan College of Performing Arts and a predecessor of the National Taiwan Opera College.

In recent years, Jinying Wang has participated in performances in Da Ai Television’s <Bodhi Mind of Meditation - The Legend of the Monk> and the Tang Mei Yun Taiwanese Opera Company.

Award-winning Experiences

Jinying Wang won the 8th Global Chinese Culture & Arts Award, and the “Taipei Cultural Award” granted by the Department of Cultural Affairs[3], Taipei City Government Taipei City Government.

In 2014, she received the “Taipei City Traditional Art Artist Award” granted by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government.[4]

In 2020, the Ministry of Culture designated Jinying Wang as an “important preserver of traditional performing arts - Taiwanese opera” - A national treasure artist (a living national treasure).[5]
