James T. Byron (born 1993), better known as Jim Byron, is an American nonprofit executive who is currently the President and CEO of the Richard Nixon Foundation.
Early life
Byron was born in Santa Monica, California and raised in nearby Orange County, where he attended Santa Margarita Catholic High School.[1] He attended Chapman University in Orange, California and graduated with a BA in business administration and a minor in history.[2] He was a member of Phi Delta Theta.[3]
Career
Byron began volunteering at the Richard Nixon Foundation in 2007 in the marketing department.[4] The Foundation had recently entered into an agreement with the National Archives and Records Administration to co-operate the Nixon Library. He continued interning part-time throughout high school.
In 2015, Byron worked with Fred Malek, who had served as White House Personnel Director in the Nixon administration, to raise funds for the Richard Nixon Foundation. Byron later managed the re-opening of the Nixon Library after a $15 million renovation in 2016.[5]
Byron was unanimously elected President and CEO of the Richard Nixon Foundation in November 2021 by the Board of Directors, succeeding Hugh Hewitt.[5] Hewitt is a radio commentator with the Salem Radio Network and columnist for the Washington Post. Byron described Hewitt as a mentor.[4]
In July 2022, Byron was named a “Person of Interest” by Politico Magazine. He was described as “polite, well-spoken and almost painfully earnest in his regard for American political history.” Byron described the Watergate scandal as “a bellwether of changing times in America” and a window into the “cultural and ideological changes and clashes that began to reshape, redefine and divide society.”[6]
As President, Byron introduced two new Foundation programs: the Nixon National Cancer Conference and the Grand Strategy Summit and has stated that he hopes to contribute to civics education in the community.[2] He has said that his focus is “expanding online content and educational offerings, supporting Chapman [University] scholars’ research and attracting more international visitors.”[4]
Byron was the guest on C-SPAN’s Q&A for one hour in December 2021.[7]
Personal life
Byron lives in Costa Mesa, California and plays tennis and golf.[5]
