Jenny Carchman is an American documentary film director and producer. She is best known for her work on the Showtime (TV network) series The Fourth Estate, Gossip, and Enlighten Us.

Life and Career

Carchman was born in Princeton, New Jersey. She graduated from Princeton High School, Barnard College and received a masters in fine art photography from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Her first job in film was as the still photographer for the Todd Solondz movie Welcome to the Dollhouse.

In 1998, she made an audio documentary with Stacy Abramson and Dave Isay[1] for National Public Radio called The Jewish Giant[2] based on her cousin Eddie Carmel,[3] who was the subject of one of Diane Arbus' most famous photographs.

Shortly thereafter, she produced a number of films for PBS including programing for Frontline, American Masters and American Experience.

Carchman directed One Nation Under Dog for HBO in 2012 which premiered at the Tribeca Festival. She went on to produce several documentary films for Martin Scorsese and many other prominent directors. Some of these titles include Ed Koch, Jane Jacobs and Long Strange Trip, a six-part documentary series about the Grateful Dead.

In 2016, Carchman directed Enlighten Us, a documentary film about the self-help guru James Arthur Ray which also premiered at the Tribeca Festival. She directed two film series about the criminal justice system called We Are Witnesses for The Marshall Project which earned her many top awards in addition to an Emmy nomination.

In 2018, Carchman directed and produced the four-part series The Fourth Estate (TV series) for Showtime which follows reporters inside the New York Times as they cover the first year of the Trump presidency. The series was the closing night film of the Tribeca Festival and was nominated for many awards including an Emmy. Carchman followed up with an Emmy-nominated documentary short called The Family Business: Trump and Taxes which shows three reporters as they uncover an astonishing story about the Trump family's finances.

Carchman directed and produced the four-part Showtime series, Gossip about Cindy Adams at the New York Post and the role of gossip in journalism. It premiered in 2021.
