Jennifer Carol Pizer is an American civil rights attorney and the Chief Legal Officer.[1] of Lambda Legal. As Chief Legal Officer, Pizer oversees Lambda Legal’s department of over 20 attorneys and five dozen impact cases on behalf of the oldest and largest organization dedicated to advancing the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and everyone living with HIV through impact litigation, public policy and education.

Early life & Education

Pizer was born to a Jewish American mother and a New Zealand immigrant father.

She clerked for Honorable Ann Aldrich of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, received her J.D. from New York University School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College.

Legal Cases

  • In re Marriage Cases|re Marriage Cases, 2008 - Pizer co-counseled the litigation that legalized marriage between same-sex couples in California on May 15th, 2008.
  • N. Coast Women's Care Med. v. S.C, 2008 - Pizer won a unanimous California Supreme Court victory in N. Coast Women's Care Med. v. S.C on behalf of Guadalupe Benitez, a lesbian denied infertility due to the discriminatory religious objections brought forth by her doctor[2]
  • C.P. v. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, 2022 - Pizer was co-counsel to the federal lawsuit challenging Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois’s (“BCBSIL”) administration of a blanket exclusion of gender-affirming care in an employer-provided health insurance plan provided by Catholic Health Initiatives Franciscan.
