We Need to Talk: A Memoir About Wealth

Jennifer Risher is an American author and philanthropist. She is the author of We Need to Talk: A Memoir About Wealth, and the co-founder of #HalfMyDAF, a philanthropic initiative encouraging donor-advised fund holders to give away half of their funds to charitable organizations. Her work focuses on wealth, identity, and philanthropy.

Early life and education

Risher was raised in the Pacific Northwest and graduated from Connecticut College.[1][2]

Career

Risher began her career at Microsoft in the early 1990s, where she worked as a recruiter and later as a product manager.[3] She has described her early experiences at the company—and the financial gains that accompanied Microsoft's growth—as formative in shaping her understanding of wealth and its social impact.[4]

Writing

Risher is the author of We Need to Talk: A Memoir About Wealth (2020), published by Xeno Books[5] The book examines the emotional and relational effects of coming into significant wealth, and it aims to break taboos around discussing money.[6] In interviews and podcasts, she has said that her goal is to "normalize conversations about money" and to help others find meaning and purpose in how they use their resources.[7][4]

Philanthropy and #HalfMyDAF

In 2020, Risher and her husband launched #HalfMyDAF, a campaign that encourages holders of donor-advised funds to donate at least half of their assets to active nonprofits.[8] The initiative was created during the COVID-19 pandemic to help move charitable dollars more quickly into communities in need.[9] According to the organization’s public reports, millions of dollars have since been distributed to thousands of nonprofits across the United States.[10]

Risher has written and spoken publicly about philanthropy, emphasizing transparency and values-based giving.[4] She is also a member of Women Moving Millions, a network of female philanthropists focused on gender equity.[2]

Personal life

Risher is married to David Risher, the chief executive officer of Lyft.[11] The couple live in the San Francisco Bay Area and have two daughters.[3]
