Jendt Hawkins, known professionally as JJ Hawkins, is an American actor, writer, and producer[1]. Born and raised in Antioch, CA, he began acting in high school. He moved to Los Angeles, CA in 2015 and began acting professionally. After moving to LA, he came out as transgender and acted through his transition. He was raised a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. [2]

Early Life

JJ was born with the name Jenna Hawkins. He attended Deer Valley High School in Antioch, CA, where he first started acting. He was crowned Homecoming Queen his senior year.[3] He then attended BYU, where he became involved with Understanding Sexuality, Gender, and Allyship (USGA) [formerly Understanding Same-Gender Attraction][4] and was featured in their viral "It Gets Better" video for the It Gets Better Project. [5] He was the vice-president of USGA his senior year.[6] JJ moved to Los Angeles and was a substitute teacher at Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts in Downtown Los Angeles.[7]

Career

JJ first came to prominence playing the first out non-binary character on national television, Riley Hooper, on the CBS show The Red Line.[8] After multiple CBS shows, including a guest star role written for him as Jax Hopkins (off JJ Hawkins) on All Rise.[9] JJ also received international attention for playing the first transgender character in The CW show Charmed. [10]

Awards

JJ was marked by Variety Magazine as one of the Top 20 Actors from Historically Underrepresented Communities[11]. He also was titled Actor of the Month by the Casting Society of America teamed with IMDbPro for the month of December 2020.[12] Jason Kennedy of the CSA noted in the article that JJ "is on the verge of stardom."[12] JJ was also a cast member of the Sony Diverse Actor's Showcase in 2022. [13]

Personal Life

JJ is publicly out as transgender. His pronouns are he/him or they/them.[14] He currently has a girlfriend.[15]
