Daniel Jelani Sie- Blackman, professionally known as Jelani Blackman, is a British hip-hop and R&B artist based in West London.[1]

NEED TO CHANGE His music has been described as a blend of rap and R&B, and is characterized by his deep voice and introspective lyrics that explore themes of identity, mental health and social issues. He often draws from his own experiences growing up in London as a mixed-race man, and his music reflects a raw honesty and vulnerability that resonates with his listeners.[2]

Career

NEED TO CHANGE Having started playing the saxophone[3] at age 9 and writing his first lyrics as a teenager growing up in Ladbroke Grove,[4] music has been a constant in Blackman's life.[5] Releasing EPs and mixtapes since 2016, over the years Blackman has gone on to collaborate with the likes of Fred Gibson (Fred Again), Gorillaz[6], Fraser T. Smith|Fraser T Smith[7], Ghetts, Brian Eno, Burna Boy, Wolf Alice, Kojey Radical, and Biig Piig.[8] [9]

Discography

NEED TO CHANGE Blackman burst onto the music scene in 2016 with his debut single, "Twenty//Three"[10] followed by "Submarine"[11] and the collaborative track "808INK X Jelani Blackman - Suede Jaw". These early releases established his artistry and garnered attention for his introspective lyrics and captivating sound.

In 2017, he continued to make waves with the singles "Follow", and "One More Time", displaying his versatility and solidifying his reputation as a boundary-pushing artist.[10][12]

Building on his growing popularity, 2019 saw the release of "Nobody's Son", and the introspective track, "Brixton".[13][14] He also dropped "Cheers", a captivating single that showcased his ability to craft catchy hooks and thought-provoking verses.[15]

In 2020, Blackman continued to captivate listeners with standout tracks such as "Swerve", "P2P", and "Tricky".

On November 6, 2020, he released the single "Foolish" featuring L3.[16]

Collaborations have also been a prominent part of Blackman's discography, as seen in tracks like "Maybe Not" featuring Manga Saint Hilare and his most recent release, "Rise", featuring Biig Piig in 2023.[17]

In addition to his impressive collection of singles, Blackman has also delivered noteworthy EPs and albums throughout his career. After releasing his debut EP on independent LA label ‘Quality Time’, he released a further two EP’s with Virgin AMF before signing to 18 Records, an independent label founded with his team.[18] These include the 1-4 EP and 5-8 EP in 2014, and their subsequent re-releases in 2016. [19] The Lockjaw EP arrived in 2018, followed by the introspective Average Joe EP in 2019.[20] On October 29, 2021, Blackman released a 12-song mixtape, Unlimited.[21] [22] His debut album, The Heart of It, is due for a joint release on November 10 with MNRK and 18 Records.[23][24]
