Jeffrey Paul Punske (born May 6, 1983) is an Associate Professor of linguistics, in the School of Languages and Linguistics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His primary area of expertise is in the syntax-morphology interface, particularly under the framework of Distributed Morphology.

Punske, born and raised in Tucson, received his B.A. and Ph.D. (2012) in Linguistics from the University of Arizona. His dissertation, entitled ‘Aspects of the Internal Structure of nominalizations: roots, morphology, and derivation’’ contributes to the understanding of the structure of English nominalization, in terms of their syntactic, semantic, and morphological complexity. He was primarily advised by Heidi Harley, Simin Karimi, Andrew Carnie, and Andy Barss. As a graduate student, he co-founded Arizona Linguistics Circle (ALC), a now-annual student-run conference.

Since 2014, Punske has been a professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). He has an upcoming morphology textbook, entitled Morphology: A Distributed Morphology Introduction. In addition to research on the syntax-morphology interface, Punske has developed secondary interests in linguistics pedagogy and xenolinguistics. Within linguistics pedagogy, he is interested in using invented languages as a tool to teach linguistics to undergraduates. To this end, he has co-edited Language Invention in Linguistics Pedagogy and regularly teaches ‘Invented Languages,’ an elective offered at SIUC. Within xenolinguistics, Punske is interested in the linguistic considerations for interstellar travel. He has given a TEDxSIUC talk[1], as well as an invited talk at the European Space Research and Technology Centre[2] on this topic.

Beyond research, Punske is an active member of the Southern Illinois community. In 2021, he was named to The Southern Illinoisan’s annual ‘40 under 40’ list[3], in part due to his organization and participation in Salukicon, an annual convention that recruits local talent to SIUC.
