Jeffrey Emanuel (born 1982) is an American entrepreneur, artificial intelligence expert, and former investment analyst. He is the founder and CEO of Pastel Network,[1] a blockchain platform focused on decentralized AI inference and file storage.[2] Emanuel gained widespread attention in 2025 for his analysis of Nvidia's AI strategy and the impact of DeepSeek, which coincided with significant market movements in the technology sector.[3] [4] [5]

Education and early life

Emanuel was born in New Rochelle, New York. He developed an early interest in neural networks in 1998, years before deep learning became widely recognized. He earned a bachelor's degree in pure mathematics from Reed College in 2005.[6]

Career

Finance and investment

Before his work in technology, Emanuel worked as a hedge fund analyst, focusing on long/short equity strategies. He held positions at several investment firms including Balyasny Asset Management, Millennium Management, and Tyndall Partners.[7] He was recognized twice with the Value Investors Club's Best Idea Award for his investment research and analysis.[8]

Technology and AI research

In 2010, Emanuel began working on AI models and subsequently became involved in AI research, software development, and blockchain technology.[6] He has contributed to several open-source AI and machine learning projects, including llm-aided-ocr[9] and Swiss Army Llama.[10] His work has focused on large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, and AI-driven software development, primarily using Python, JavaScript, and Rust. [11]

Pastel Network

Emanuel founded Pastel Network, [12] a blockchain platform specializing in decentralized AI inference and file storage. [1] As CEO, he has been a significant contributor to the project's technical development. The platform's native token, PSL, is traded on multiple cryptocurrency exchanges.[2]

Nvidia analysis and market impact

On 25 January 2025, Emanuel published "The Short Case for Nvidia Stock," a 12,000-word analysis examining Nvidia's AI strategy, competitive risks, and valuation concerns. [13] The report, written in one day from his Brooklyn apartment, was shared across various platforms including Value Investors Club, Reddit, and X (formerly Twitter). The analysis gained traction after being shared by prominent figures in technology and investment, including Chamath Palihapitiya and Naval Ravikant.[6]

The report's publication preceded a significant market event on 27 January 2025, when Nvidia's stock declined 17%, resulting in approximately $600 billion in market capitalization losses—recorded as the largest single-day loss for any company in stock market history at that time. [14] The market reaction extended to other AI and semiconductor stocks, contributing to broader market movements. Bloomberg columnist Matt Levine characterized Emanuel's analysis as "a candidate for the most impactful short research report ever." [15] Emanuel stated he did not hold a short position in Nvidia when publishing his analysis.[6]

His work has been featured in various media outlets, including The New York Times.[16]

Patents and publications

Emanuel has a pending patent application in near-duplicate image detection technology.[17]
