Jeffrey Ng Chang Jun (Huáng Zhǎngjùn) or commonly known by his stage name Jeff Ng, is a freelance music teacher and busker from Singapore who became well-known after about 2000 people showed up to one of his concerts outside The Cathay.[1]

Career

Jeff Ng, a musician who has been playing for 14 years, is 32 years old as of 2022. The former student of Montfort Secondary School disclosed that he didn't used to like singing when interviewed about his recent achievements. He claims that basketball was truly his first love. That is, until his teacher, who was a nighttime singer at a music cafe, gave him inspiration. He began his career at Chinatown Food Street, which is now closed, and was invited to sing at a busking event in 2018 by the Singapore Tourism Board and the Chinatown Food Street Organization. I did a weekly show there for two months while we tested it out, and after that, it extended to two years. He also used to sing in bars and at business functions and weddings before that.[1]

As a contestant on the China reality television singing competition The Voice of China (season 3)|The Voice of China, the singer also received a good amount of exposure to mainstream media. Despite not winning, he was able to secure a place among the Top 22 contestants for the 2014 season. The busker has performed covers on social media with his partner, including a Christmas medley that was recorded in December 2021.[2]

MustShareNews reports that on 12 June 2022, a video of Jeff busking went viral on TikTok, catapulting him into celebrity.[3] A few weeks later, reports stated that there "seemed to be barely any space to sit on the ground, with people even standing in the bushes" due to the large increase in the number of attendees. After his final scheduled show on 25 June 25, it is unknown if he will still be performing weekly at The Cathay.[4] On 30 July, he had previously canceled his shows—was seen performing as the opening act at the imPAct Open House.[5] Jeff has declared that he will be singing outside The Cathay once more. His first post-vacation performance took place on 30 September, from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.[6]

Personal life

Jeff works as a freelance music teacher with Ark Music School when he isn't busking. The busker specializes in beginning to advanced keyboard and vocal instruction.[2]

Family

Jeff's family owns a shop that sells prayer offerings. They don't make much money, but they have given his career a lot of support.[1] Zona Ng is also a vocalist. Prior to his rise to fame as a busker on TikTok in 2023, the couple tied the knot in June 2021.[2]

Lena Ng, the ex-girlfriend of Jeff, shared on Facebook on 30 June 2022, a detailed post about her abusive and terrible previous relationship with a "뫽媝" (national treasure). It was subsequently discovered that this unidentified "national treasure" was Jeff Ng. She posted old conversation receipts in the post that showed his controlling and egotistical behaviors.[7][8] This damaged the public's perception of him and provoked indignation among his followers as well as an online discussion over the singer's actual nature.[9]

Education

Jeff previously attended Singapore's Nanyang Polytechnic to study digital media.[1]
