Jeff Katz is an American-born photographer. After graduating from college, he moved to Los Angeles, CA. He began his career in the entertainment business shooting images for record labels, and music publications such as Warner Bros Records, and Rolling Stone Magazine [1]. His early work was primarily photographing recording artists. Since then, Katz has been hired as the photographer for the music, television, and motion picture industries, advertising, magazines, sports, and book publishing.

Collaboration with Prince

In his early 20s, Jeff Katz became the primary personal photographer and collaborator for the musician Prince (musician).[2] His first session for Prince was in 1985 to photograph him on the set of his “Raspberry Parade” music video, filmed in Los Angeles. He was then hired to assist him in photographing “The Family" [3] album. Katz became the principal photographer for Prince's movie Under The Cherry Moon[4] filmed in Nice, France. From that time forward, he created over fifty photo sessions with Prince and his roster of artists.[5]

In 2019, Katz was invited as a guest speaker at the Prince Celebration at Paisley Park in Chanhassen, MN.[6][7] His photographs of Prince have appeared worldwide, and are displayed on the walls of Paisley Park, including a room dedicated to the Under The Cherry Moon film. In an agreement with Prince's estate, Katz has an online art gallery showcasing his historic and iconic images of Prince.[8] Recently Jeff Katz's photographs were published in Paisley Park's rerelease of Prince's "Sign O' The Times" recording [9] [10] covered by Rolling Stone Magazine [11].

Career

Jeff Katz has photographed a wide-ranging list of contemporary figures, artists and performers including President Joe Biden and Elton John [12] , Stevie Wonder, Zendaya, LL Cool J,[13] Olivia Munn,[14] ZZ Top, Earth, Wind and Fire, Bon Jovi, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rob Lowe,[15] Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones, Kim Basinger, Denzel Washington, Colin Kaepernick,[16] Ozzy Osbourne,[17] Cindy Crawford, Mel Gibson,[18] Laurence Fishburne, John Densmore,[19] Sylvester Stallone, Kevin Costner, David Boreanaz,[20] and Sir Anthony Hopkins.[21]

Katz is known for his lighting techniques and in-camera film effects. His commercial photography reflects the various genres his career has spanned. His professional work, including fine art photography, features deep contrast, shadow, and cinematic lighting.[22]

He has a studio in California and is currently photographing and creating a new fine art collection, along with his career photographing artists from various facets of the entertainment business.[23]
