Jeff Gorman (born November 17, 1989) is an American musician and songwriter. He is best known as the vocalist and guitarist of the rock duo Illiterate Light.[1]

Early Life

Gorman grew up outside of Baltimore, MD and attended Calvert Hall High School. He then attended James Madison University where he received a BA in History. Initially a self-taught drummer, Gorman began writing songs in high school on guitar and piano. He is the nephew of Steve Gorman of The Black Crowes.[1]

Career

Gorman formed Illiterate Light in 2015 with drummer Jake Cochran. They have released two full-length albums and several EPs. He is the primary songwriter for Illiterate Light, though he and Cochran collaborate heavily in the studio. They have performed at such festivals as Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and Newport Folk Festival.

Their debut album was recorded in Richmond, VA at Montrose Recording and Nashville, TN at Sputnik Sound with producer Vance Powell. It was released on Atlantic Records on October 11, 2019 to positive reviews, however the Covid-19 Pandemic cut all touring and marketing efforts short at which point Illiterate Light pursued an independent path.[2][3][4]

Their second LP Sunburned was recorded at Montrose Recording in Richmond, VA with co-producer Adrian Olsen and engineer Danny Gibney. Sunburned marked a maturation in their songwriting towards a heavier and darker introspection, with fuzzed out guitars and copious reverb. Sunburned has received notable press and fan support, with SPIN Magazine citing it as "one of the best albums of 2023."[5][6][7][8][9] Sunburned was released on Illiterate Light's own record label Red Book Records with marketing and distribution by Thirty Tigers.[10] They followed the release of Sunburned with a 4-song EP titled Aloe, containing several songs that were written during the Sunburned sessions.[11]

Gorman cited Neil Young as one of his primary influences on Sunburned.

Personal Life

Gorman is married to food writer Sarah Golibart Gorman and lives in Harrisonburg, VA. His interests include integral theory, perennial philosophy, the enneagram of personality, and Christian mysticism. Between 2015-2017 Gorman studied under Franciscan Priest Richard Rohr.[12]
