Jeanie Greene (February 6, 1943 – August 19, 2018 ) was session vocalist and recording artist from the Muscle Shoals music scene, known for her work with Elvis Presley, her 1971 solo album Mary Called Jeanie Greene, and her collaborations with artists like Percy Sledge[2] and Cher.[3]
Career
Early in her career, under the name Jeanie Johnson, she caught the attention of country star Chet Atkins, who assisted her in securing a contract with RCA Victor. Throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, she released several singles under various names, including Jeanie Johnson and Jeanie Fortune. Her dynamic vocal abilities led her to work as a backup singer for a diverse array of artists, most notably recording approximately 18 tracks with Elvis Presley and performing at The Concert for Bangladesh.[1]
While working at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, she could earn $25 a session in 1964.[4]
She later moved to the newly created Muscle Shoals Studio where she continued recording backup for artists like Cher.[5] In 1971, Jeanie released her solo album, "Mary Called Jeanie Greene," produced by Don Nix at the famed Muscle Shoals Studios. The album showcased her versatile vocal range, blending elements of gospel, soul, and rock.
Personal life
As a young singer, Jeanie married Melvin Greene a session guitarist at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.[6] Later she married Robert Max Lee.
