Dr. Jean Chrysostome Nyirinkwaya (Ñi-rink-waya; born 23 May 1954) is a popular gynecologist-obstetrician based in Rwanda. He has been working as a gynecologist in Rwanda since 1994. He is known in the country for the love and admiration he has received in his profession from the Rwandan population. On February 1st, 2017, Dr. Nyirinkwaya was recognized as a “hero” by the people of Remera for his contribution to the development and welfare of the people. [1]

Dr. Nyirinkwaya is the owner and founder of La Croix du Sud Hospital which is located in Remera. He is the Chairman of the Rwanda Healthcare Federation, a member of Rwanda Private Practitioners Association, Vice Chairman and member of Rwanda Society of Obstetrics & Gynecologists. He also is a Board Member of Hospital Kibagabaga.[2] In 2009, he established La Croix du Sud Hospital which at the time was the only private owned hospital in Rwanda.[3] Dr. Nyirinkwaya set up La Croix du Sud Hospital in 2009. The hospital itself is locally known as "Kwa Nyirinkwaya" which means "At Nyirinkwaya's". It has more than 100 beds and has the capacity to assist 350 out patients a day.[3] It is located at Gishushu, Remera Sector KG 201 ST 7.

Born in Cibitoke and raised in Bujumbura, Dr. Nyirinkwaya received his medical degree in 1986 at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal.[2] After his graduation, Dr. Nyirinkwaya went to Bujumbura, Burundi where he worked as a gynecologist at the Prince Regent Charles hospital. It is in 1990 that he worked at his father’s Clinic in Bujumbura called “Nyirinkwaya clinic” which is where he fully learned about what is needed to equip and run a full scale hospital. His interest in medicine and dream of one day opening a full scale hospital was inspired by his father’s work. [4]

In 1994, after the end of the genocide against the Tutsis,[5]Dr. Nyirinkwaya worked as the Regional Medical Director of Kigali District in the Public Health sector. At the time, he was appointed by the then minister of health Hon. Dr. Karemera. In 1995, he set up a clinic in Nyamirambo to respond to medical issues that were in Rwanda at the time. [4] In 1998, Dr. Nyirinkwaya expanded the clinic he had opened in Nyamirambo into a polyclinic which is where he gained his popularity in the country. However, it isn’t until 2009 that he founded La Croix du Sud hospital. [3]
