Jean Hotz was a Swiss diplomat who, after 1939, coined the Swiss foreign policy during and after World War II.

Biography

Jean Hotz grew up in the hamlet of Nänikon as the son of the farmer Hermann Hotz.

Hotz studied economy and law in Zurich, and earned a PhD degree in 1917. From 1915 on, he taught economy at the Kantonsschule in Zurich. He began his tenure at the trade section of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research in 1922, and from 1935 until 1954, he was the director of that ministry's section.[1]

In 1951, with his United States counterpart Harold F. Linder, he negotiated the, which put limits on which and how many goods Swiss companies could export to the Soviet Union and the other Eastern Bloc|Eastern bloc states.[2] Specifically, Switzerland was made part of the CoCom sanctions, which was problematic in regard to Swiss neutrality – especially as all NATO members plus Japan, but without Iceland, subscribed to these sanctions.[1]

After 1955, he was member of the directorial boards of several compeanies like Sulzer and Sandoz.[1]
