Professor Jaydip Ray DL

Professor Jaydip Ray DL is the first High Sheriff for South Yorkshire from the Asian community.[1] He is also a Deputy Lieutenant for the South Yorkshire Lieutenancy, representing the HM Lord Lieutenant in the county.[2][3] Ray is a British consultant Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon, academic, and civic leader. He is a Professor of Otology Neurotology at the University of Sheffield[4], Professor of ENT at Sheffield Hallam University[5], and the Clinical Director for ENT at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.[6]

Early Life, Education and Training

Ray was born in India, where he completed his medical degree before moving to the UK to begin his junior doctor training at St Thomas Hospital, London. Ray pursued research in implantable hearing solutions at Cambridge, funded by the Cambridge Hearing Foundation. He completed his higher surgical training at University Hospitals Birmingham, followed by advanced fellowships at University of Sydney University, Australia and Stanford University, USA.

Career and Achievements

Ray joined Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in 2006 as a consultant ENT surgeon, and has since become a leading figure in the fields of otology and neurotology. He has wide experience in teaching, training, and research.[7][8]

Ray has been involved in the delivery of several innovative services in his field, including the creation of new services for auditory implants[9][10], laryngeal dystonia[11], wearable sensor-based balance and falls monitoring (on the NHS National Test Beds Programme)[12], and virtual reality balance rehabilitation which have attracted regular media attention. [13][14][15]

Ray is a founding member of the ENT UK Foundation which supports trainee-led research in ENT working in partnership with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the National Academic Collaborative for Equity and Inclusivity in Surgery (ACEIS) UK.[16][17][18] He is a founding member of the Global Healthy Hearing Ears Initiative, a collaborative of international experts in 10 countries in combating ear disease and hearing loss.[19] He was part of the ENT UK Covid-19 Guidance Committee, Cochrane Rapid Evidence Synthesis portal and NIHR’s AGP Task and Finish Group.[20][21] Ray has been instrumental in establishing an association between deafness and dementia.[22]
