Jay Heinrichs is the American author of Thank You for Arguing, a New York Times Best Seller|New York Times education bestseller.[1]

Life and Career

Author

Jay Heinrichs is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Thank You for Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion (Penguin Random House).[1][2] Published in 14 languages and four editions,[3] it ranks among the top 10 books assigned by faculty at Harvard University|Harvard[4] and has been used in more than 3,000 college courses.[5] He has also written two more books on rhetoric, Word Hero (which teaches the art of “witcraft”)[6] and How to Argue with a Cat: A Human’s Guide to Persuasion.[7]

Heinrichs is the founding partner of Gavia Books.[8] Under that publishing imprint, he wrote (with former NASA head engineer Stephen Sandford) The Gravity Well: America’s Next Greatest Mission, an exploration of the outer space economy.[9] He also partnered with 12-year-old cancer survivor Sadie Keller and Texas Congressman Michael McCaul to write and publish Better Angels.[10][11]

In 2021, Heinrichs published his first novel, The Prophet Joan.[12]

Controversy

In an interview for Outside (magazine)|Outside magazine in 2000, Heinrichs quoted Ralph Nader as favoring George W. Bush over Al Gore in the then-upcoming 2000 United States presidential election|presidential election.[13] Nader later denied the quote.[14]
