Jay Grossman (born c. 1965) is an American sports agent and attorney who represents professional ice hockey players. He is the president of JMG Sports, a player representation firm formerly known as SFX Hockey and PuckAgency. Grossman has represented players in the National Hockey League (NHL) and international professional leagues.[1]
Early life and education
Grossman grew up in New York and became involved in ice hockey at a young age. He attended Union College, where he played collegiate hockey and later served as a graduate assistant coach with the men’s ice hockey program. He graduated with honors before earning a Juris Doctor from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.[2][1]
Career
Grossman began his professional career in hockey operations, working in video and analytical roles for several NHL teams, including the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, and Vancouver Canucks. Early in his career, he worked under head coach Roger Neilson and later served on the Rangers’ staff during Herb Brooks’s tenure in the mid-1980s.[2]
He later transitioned into player representation. Grossman led the hockey division at SFX Hockey and continued in a leadership role after the practice was reorganized as PuckAgency, which later operated under the name JMG Sports.[3]
A 2004 profile in Sports Illustrated described Grossman’s work as an NHL agent with an international focus, highlighting his role in identifying and representing players from Europe and Russia.[4]
Player representation
Grossman has represented professional hockey players from North America and Europe. Independent reporting, alumni publications, and industry databases list players associated with his agency over the course of his career, including Brian Leetch, Sergei Zubov, Ilya Kovalchuk, Nikolai Khabibulin, Pekka Rinne, Alexei Zhamnov, and Alexei Cherepanov.[1][2][5]
During negotiations surrounding Ilya Kovalchuk’s contract with the New Jersey Devils in 2010, Grossman was identified in contemporaneous media coverage as Kovalchuk’s agent. The original 17-year agreement was rejected by the NHL before a revised long-term contract was approved.[6][7]
Grossman represented goaltender Pekka Rinne when Rinne signed a seven-year, US$49 million contract extension with the Nashville Predators in 2011; reporting at the time quoted Grossman as Rinne’s agent.[8]
Industry contract databases also list Grossman or his firm as the signing agent for players including Mikey Anderson, who signed an eight-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings in 2023, and Matt Coronato, who signed his entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames after being selected in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.[9][10]
Other activities
Grossman has participated in academic and alumni programs related to sports management, including speaking engagements hosted by Union College and Western New England University.[1][11] According to his agency’s website, Grossman has taught as an adjunct professor at Western New England University in Springfield, Massachusetts.[12]
