Jay Deutsch (Jacob Deutsch), (September 15, 1967) is an American entrepreneur and businessman. He is co-founder of Bensussen Deutsch & Associates (BDA), which provides promotional marketing services[1].

As noted by Forbes[2], Jay is also part owner of NHL Team, the Seattle Kraken.

Early Business Career and BDA

Deutsch co-founded[3] Bensussen Deutsch & Associates (BDA) in 1984 while a senior in high school with his friend Eric Bensussen, who was in college at the time. Deutsch and Bensussen began making and selling promotional buttons for local Seattle teams while in their mid-teen years[4].

With Deutsch as CEO, BDA has become Major League Baseball’s official supplier[5] of merchandise and manufactures promotional items including t-shirts, towels, and bobbleheads, of which it produces approximately six million annually. The company has similar arrangements with other professional sports teams and entities, including the Olympics, and works with Fortune 1000[5] companies on merchandising campaigns, including AT&T, Coca-Cola, The Home Depot, Ford, Corona, and Unilever.

The Puget Sound Business Journal reported that BDA’s sales revenue[6] was expected to top $500 million in 2019. BDA is headquartered[3] in Woodinville, WA.

Awards and Recognition

With Deutsch as CEO, BDA has earned several recognitions and honors. In 2017, BDA was ranked 12 among large companies on Seattle Business Magazine’s 2017 list of the Top 100 Best Companies to Work For[7].

In 2020, Promo Marketing named BDA #4 in its Top 50 list of promotional marketing firms based on sales figures; in 2019, BDA was #3 on the Promo Marketing list[8]. In 2020, The Advertising Specialty Institute named BDA as #5 on its Top 40 Distributors list based on sales revenue, the same position the firm held on the Institute’s 2019 Top 40[9] list.

Quality Certification Alliance

In 2008, Deutsch founded the Quality Certification Alliance (QCA), a coalition dedicated to ensuring accountability[10] and independent validation of corporate responsibility in the promo industry’s supply chain. He served on the board for 10 years, 8 years as president, before stepping down in 2018[11].

Seattle Kraken NHL Franchise Co-Ownership

In September 2018, The Seattle Times reported that Deutsch was one of seven minority co-owners of the National Hockey League’s new franchise[12] in Seattle. In July 2020, the NHL revealed the new team name, the Seattle Kraken and the Advertising Specialty Institute reported that the team’s merchandising, led by BDA, broke the League’s record for branded merchandise sales[13].

Personal Life and Charitable Work

Deutsch was born in Seattle and resides[14] just outside the city with his family.

In 2013, Deutsch appeared on season 3, episode 9 of ABC-TV’s Secret Millionaire[15]. During the episode, he worked with two Phoenix, Arizona businesses supporting victims of domestic violence[14]. The episode aired nationally, Sunday, August 11th at 8:00 PM on the ABC Television Network.

He appeared on the program in honor of Susan Brockert, a friend and longtime BDA employee who was murdered by her boyfriend during a BDA company retreat in 2011. Deutsch wrote[16] about the impact of this event on his colleagues and company in Inc. Magazine in 2012. Brockert’s death was the impetus for Deutsch and his partners to create the company’s 501c3[17] philanthropic program, BDA Cares, which works to garner corporate support to fight domestic violence against spouses and children. BDA has also partnered with Seattle-based Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research since 2000; Deutsch and BDA’s their efforts were reported on in Forbes[18] in 2013.
