Jawad Sohrab Malik is a Pakistani politician, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He is one of the youngest members of the federal cabinet.

Early life and education:

Jawad Sohrab Malik was born on (Date) in Islamabad, Pakistan. He got his early education in Islamabad. He was at the Convent School till grade 5 and then joined The International School of Islamabad. Thereafter, he read law from University Of Cardiff, UK.[1] However, the desire to return to Pakistan & serve his people made him move back soon after the completion of his degree.[2]

Family & political background:

Jawad Sohrab Malik was born in a renowned political family. His father's as well as mother's family, both have had an illustrious legacy in politics. His paternal grandfather, Malik Munir Khan was an active politician and remained Chairman of Gujar Khan. Malik Mehboob Khan, another eminent figure of Gujar Khan's Malik family, remained MNA. Malik Yaqoob Khan, his grandmother's brother, remained MPA from Gujar Khan. It's pertinent to mention here that MNA, MPA & Chairman, all 3 slots of Gujar Khan were simultaneously held by the Malik family. Famous British Singer, Zayn Malik is also his paternal cousin. [3]

His mother hails from the distinguished Soomro family. Soomro's family's politics dates back to the 1920s. A journey of more than 100 years. The head of the Soomro family, the late Allah-Buksh Soomro was the first CM of Sindh when Sindh was separated from the Bombay presidency. Jawad Sohrab Malik's maternal great-grandfather, Maula-Buksh Soomro was a Federal Minister pre and post-partition. He was Quaid-e-Azam's close confidant. He remained Rehabilitation Minister post-partition & took care of all affairs related to the properties of migrants.

His grandfather, Ahmed-Mian Soomro served as deputy speaker in the 1960’s. Illahi Buksh Soomro, another scion of the Soomro family, served as federal minister multiple times and as speaker of the National Assembly too. Muhammad Mian Soomro, his uncle, served as Governor of Sindh, Chairman Senate, President, and Prime Minister of Pakistan. Muhammad Mian Soomro is currently the sitting MNA from Jacobabad.

Malik's grandmother, Begum Saeeda Soomro served as Nazima Of Jacobabad. His mother, Maliha Malik remained an active PPP member and was also awarded a Senate ticket by the PPP. Family politics in Jacobabad is now managed by his mother.

Malik has three siblings, a brother & two sisters. Both him & his brother qualified as lawyers. Both his sisters are doctors by profession. One is working as a Pulmonologist in the USA and one is serving as GP in London. [4]

Special Assistant Prime Minister

Jawad Sohrab Malik was appointed as Special Assistant Prime Minister [5](SAPM). He was appointed by the Prime Minister at the time Shehbaz Sharif. He was given the special status of State Minister. During his period as the SAPM he met with many prominent ambassodors, such as the ambassador for the United states and Pakistan and the European Union and Pakistan.[6]

When the Anwar ul Haq Kakar Cabinet was established Jawad Sohrab Malik was appointed as SAPM for Oversea Pakistanis [7]

Entrepreneurial Career:

Since 2005, Jawad Sohrab Malik has been performing his duties as CEO of Sohrab Group, a company involved in real-estate development and property management across Pakistan, UAE, and the United Kingdom. Oversight and management of multi-million dollar asset portfolio.

In 2003, he founded Cosmo Stores Limited, a groceries and general merchandise retailer, employing over 400 employees, with an inventory exceeding one hundred thousand items, across three branches in the twin cities.[8]

Philanthropic work and recognition by COAS/Pakistan Army:

Malik has been involved in philanthropic work since 2012. His initiative 'Ramadan Dasterkhwan' has helped provide iftar/dinner to thousands of underprivileged families during the holy month. In addition, regular provision of fresh milk for underprivileged school children and delivery of ration packages to those in need, has also been a regular feature of his philanthropic efforts.

In 2020, when Covid was wreaking havoc across Pakistan, Jawad Sohrab Malik was at the forefront, leading the rehabilitation efforts. Among many other contributions of his, the transparent distribution of ration-bags among 50 Thousands families was acknowledged and recognized by the Pakistan Army. COAS himself congratulated him and presented a medal.[9]

Fahad Malik murder case:

Jawad Sohrab Malik spearheaded the legal battle to get justice for his brother, Bar­rister Fahad Malik, who was murdered in 2016, by a notorious land-grabbing gang in Islamabad. Jawad Sohrab Malik valiantly led the campaign to get justice for his brother, fighting against all odds and facing numerous threats from his opponents.
