Javier Diego Jacinto is a Mexican educator and researcher. He was born in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, and later immigrated to San Diego, California.[1].

Diego Jacinto has been involved in efforts supporting Latino/x students in higher education, particularly those from undocumented or mixed-status families, as well as first-generation students[2]. His scholarly work focuses on the experiences of undocumented students, emphasizing the sense of belonging. He introduced the Culturally and Historically Responsive Programming (CHRP), an educational framework designed to cater to the unique challenges undocumented students face. CHRP addresses various challenges such as limited resources, legal issues, financial constraints, and insufficient support networks. This framework integrates the languages, histories, identities, and experiences of these students into both academic and extracurricular activities, aiming to foster their comprehensive development.[3]

Early life

Javier Diego Jacinto, born in Mexico, relocated to the United States when he was six years old. He is of Mazateco descent from Oaxaca.[4]

In 2012, Javier Diego Jacinto obtained Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)[5].

Education

Javier completed an Associate of Arts in Elementary Teacher Education from Southwestern College, a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Arts and Sciences: Liberal Studies from San Diego State University, and a Masters of Arts in Postsecondary Educational Leadership & Student Affairs from the same institution.[6]

Career

Making history, Javier served as the first-ever Program Coordinator for the Undocumented Resource Center at San Diego State University. In this role, he took on the essential task of addressing the unique challenges faced by undocumented students at SDSU. While managing the operational aspects of the position, his primary focus remained on representing and advocating for the undocumented community. Among his many responsibilities were recruiting and training students, fostering collaborations with other resource centers, liaising with community colleges, and tailoring the center's offerings to address the specific needs and concerns of undocumented students.

Javier's vision for the center was broad and impactful. He transformed the previously once-a-year SDSU's Undocu-Week into a continuous series, shedding light on the challenges and experiences of the undocumented community at the university throughout the year. He also laid the groundwork for future initiatives by developing resources, fostering collaborations, and creating outreach programs.

Javier is currently the Community and Outreach Coordinator for the DEBER Project at the SDSU Research Foundation[6]. His academic research centers on the educational outcomes of bilingual Latino males of color and undocumented students (undocu-scholars).The core of CHRP aims to weave the languages, histories, identities, and personal experiences of undocumented students into both academic and extracurricular activities. With its strategic design, CHRP strives to bolster the holistic growth of these students in personal, academic, and professional domains[7]
