Javed Akram (Urdu: جاوید اکرام ) is a Pakistani academic who is working as a Minister of Health of the Government of Punjab, Pakistan and Former vice-chancellor of the University of Health Sciences, Lahore and the President of the Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine. Professor Javed Akram is an eminent Professor of Medicine and well known as a global medical researcher. His Impact Factor is 672 which is the highest ever for any Pakistani doctor. He is the author of six books and around 125 research papers published as a principal investigator in leading international medical journals like Lancet, BMJ, and NEJM.

He trained in UK & USA and served as dean of medicine at King Edward Medical College, Principal Allama Iqbal Medical College CEO Jinnah Hospital Lahore, Founding Vice Chancellor Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University CEO PIMS and remained Vice Chancellor of the University of Health Sciences, Lahore from 2018 to 2022, founding President of Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine and International Advisor to Royal College of Physicians London and is the recipient of the global excellence in patient care award from the same institution due to his recent research during the COVID pandemic.

He is also a fellow of the American Colleges of Cardiology and Medicine and in addition obtained fellowships from the American Society of Internal Medicine and the Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine. He is a clinician, a laboratory researcher, a medical educationist, and a health delivery administrator. He is presently leading a group working on cloning of human pharmaceutical protein genes and their commercialization. His recent efforts have resulted in the cloning of many human genes in E. coli and yeast, as source material for semi-commercial production. His research efforts are also focused on the regeneration of bone marrow and adipose tissue-derived stem cells to exploit their potential in the repair of burnt damaged skin. He is also working as Principal Investigator in clinical trials of five different COVID-19 vaccines.

He is also the founding President of the Inter-University Board of all medical universities of Punjab, founding President of Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine, and Chairman, the World Ramadan Study Group. He also conducted several multi-centered studies on COVID-19 Pandemic and its vaccines as Principal Investigator. Some of his major studies on Covid 19 include PROTECT trial, clinical trials of Zf2001 vaccine and CanSino Bio vaccine. Professor Javed Akram has contributed significantly to the delivery of quality Health Care to the ailing masses free of cost. As Principal, Allama Iqbal Medical College and Chief Executive Jinnah Hospital Lahore, he has set an enviable precedent to ensure patients' 100% free medical care. He has created a diversified range of specialties in the hospital along with a Burn and a Re-constructive Surgery Center. Another significant contribution is the establishment of medico-legal and non-medico-legal autopsy protocols at Jinnah hospital. The institution has become a leader in hospital autopsy in Pakistan.

Professor Javed Akram meticulously exploited Corporate Social Responsibility; numerous MOUs were signed for the institution's benefit. The arrangements of Public-Private Partnership have yielded fruits both in quality and quantity. Many institutional libraries were upgraded to match international standards. Initiatives for ISO certification, JCI accreditation have resulted in the conducted of audit of various procedures. His efforts have to lead to raising huge funds for IDPs, GAZA affectees and provided help in the form of medical supplies and services in collaboration with many international partners like International Health Partners, WHO, Asian Development Bank, etc. Various welfare schemes for the support staff, their families, and students of the institutions which include the establishment of a Rag shop, a recycling paper mill, Jinnah Public School, and a mosque for females, etc were also launched. A Radio station for Health Services and the provision of an Air Ambulance were initiated for the first time in Pakistan and are nearing completion. As a consequence of his invaluable services to the profession, community, and outstanding research, Professor Javed Akram has been decorated with Prime Minister’s Gold Medal for research in the field of Parkinson’s disease (1999), Best Research Award (2005-06) by National Academy of Medical Sciences and Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (2011) by the President of Pakistan and Lifetime Achievement Award by Government College University, Lahore on 20th Convocation held in November 2022.
