Jauhari Johar is a Malaysian political activist, writer and former music producer who advocates for Malay culture, Islamic governance, and the Malay language (Bahasa Melayu) as a national unifier. He is the author of the book The Malay Agenda: How to Defend Malay Power and Islamic Sovereignty in the 21st Century (2025).

Early Life and Career

Jauhari Johar (full name Ardiv Jauhari Bin Johar) was born on January 16, 1989 in Malacca, a state rooted in Malay and Islamic history. He grew up in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, where he was exposed to Malaysia’s urban multicultural environment. Raised in an influential family in the arts, he was trained by his father, Johari Teh, a respected figure in Malaysia’s music industry. Jauhari studied at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), where he earned a Diploma in Music.[1]

Known professionally as Ardiv Jauhari [2], he worked as a music producer and composer, collaborating with popular Malaysian artists such as Amy Mastura [3], Alyah, Eka Sharif [4], and Zamani. Some of his notable works include:

  • Istilah Syawal (Alyah)[5]
  • Aisyah (Projector Band)[6]
  • Sedar (Iqmal Haziq)[7]

His music often blended traditional Malay elements with contemporary sounds, reflecting his deep appreciation for Malay culture, which later became a cornerstone of his activism.

Political Activism

The 15th General Election (GE15) in 2022 marked a turning point in Jauhari's career. The fall of UMNO and its alliance with the more liberal Pakatan Harapan coalition alarmed him, as he believed it weakened Malay-Muslim values and opened the door to greater liberal and secular influences.

This inspired him to focus on Malay-Muslim political awareness. Through platforms like X (Twitter), TikTok, and his long-form writings, he built a reputation as someone who could articulate grassroots concerns into coherent political ideas. His activism calls for a modern renewal of Malay-Muslim values while respecting Malaysia's multicultural reality.

Advocacy for Bahasa Melayu

Jauhari is a strong defender of Bahasa Melayu as a national unifier. In March 2024, he agreed with Ridhuan Tee's view that the standard of Bahasa Melayu in Chinese vernacular schools (SJKC) was not on par with that of national schools. He urged the Chinese community to reevaluate the role of vernacular schools, sparking nationwide debate.[8]

In May 2024, he further argued that graduates of national schools were better suited to become political leaders than those from vernacular schools, emphasizing that elected representatives should be fluent in Bahasa Melayu to effectively represent Malaysian voters.[9]

Political Manifesto

In 2025, Jauhari published The Malay Agenda: How to Defend Malay Power and Islamic Sovereignty in the 21st Century [10]. The book outlines a political and economic manifesto for Malaysia, focusing on:

  1. Islamic Economic Principles: Emphasizing the halal industry (food, tourism, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals) and aligning with Malaysia's 12th Plan target of RM56 billion in halal exports by 2025.
  2. Educational Reforms: Promoting Bahasa Melayu as the primary medium of instruction while maintaining elective programs for other native languages.
  3. Digitalization: Advocating for digital mastery to promote "Islamic modernity" and counter extremist narratives.
  4. Leadership: Calling for leaders who combine Islamic knowledge with technical expertise and transparency in combating corruption.

Jauhari believes this approach will position Malaysia as a modern, multicultural nation guided by Islamic principles, serving as a model for other countries in the 21st century.

Media Reception and Coverage

  • Focus Malaysia noted that Jauhari's comments on vernacular schools often sparked debates on social media, eliciting diverse reactions from Malaysian society.
  • Sovereign Magazine featured his book in 2025, highlighting his concept of a shariah-compliant economy (halal economy) as a key component of Malaysia's future development framework.
