Jaron Gilinsky (born 1979) is a Canadian-American video journalist, documentary filmmaker and entrepreneur. He was an international conflict and environmental journalist for outlets including Current TV, Time, and The New York Times before founding Storyhunter, a platform for connecting major media outlets with freelance journalists and filmmakers around the world.[1]

Storyhunter significantly altered the freelance video-journalism landscape after its launch.[2]

Journalism Career

Gilinsky started his career at Current TV in August 2005, making short films in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and Israel. His documentary Dodging Katyushas[3], capturing his own near-death experience after a Hezbollah rocket attack during the 2nd Lebanon War, was the most popular video to ever air on Current TV.[4][5]. In his book Crowdsourcing, tech journalist Jeff Howe called Dodging Katyushas "a cult hit for Current, for the excellent reason that it's absolutely riveting television."[4]

His documentary on the first democratic election in Iraq after Saddam Hussein, Crashing the Elections in Kurdistan, and his film on the first tour of North Korea open to Americans, 3 Days in North Korea, both won Remi awards.

Gilinsky produced, directed, and edited a feature-length documentary on Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, Disengagement, featuring interviews with Ariel Sharon, Benjamin Netanyahu, Shimon Peres, Raanan Gissin, Rachel Saperstein, Mahmoud Abbas, Qadura Fares, and Mohammed Abu Tir.[6][7]

He won an Overseas Press Club award for his reporting for the New York Times from Tahrir Square during the Arab Spring.[8]

In 2012, Gilinsky founded Storyhunter, an online platform for more quickly connecting media outlets and brands with freelance videographers, journalists, and creators in specific geographical locations around the globe.[1][9][10]

Over the following decade, Storyhunter grew into a global freelance marketplace for content beyond journalism, and for a range of services including an "AirBnB-style" platform for foreign correspondents to find lodging in locations they were reporting on.[11]

In 2017, Gilinsky used the Storyhunter platform to produce a film called “We are the Media,” which was introduced at UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day in Jakarta, Indonesia.[12]

As a freelancer on the Storyhunter platform, Gilinsky was hired by National Geographic to produce a video on the use of drone technology in stopping illegal fishing.[13]

Personal life

In 2020, Gilinsky travelled 10,000 miles across country in an Airstream with his wife and children, camping in 14 national parks over 5 months of travel. Jaron and his wife Dana Haim wrote about the experience for Vogue.[14]
