Jan Visser Jr. (1856–1938) was a Dutch artist known for his vibrant flower still lifes and contributions to Impressionism.
Life and education
Jan Visser Jr. received his formal art education at several prominent institutions, including the Academy Minerva in Groningen and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Later, he honed his skills under the tutelage of Johannes Hinderikus Egenberger. Throughout his life, he lived and worked in various Dutch cities, such as Groningen, Amsterdam, Abcoude, and Zandvoort.
Visser's career as a teacher began when he worked as a drawing instructor and later assumed the role of an acting director at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijzers, where he mentored and influenced several emerging artists, including Leo Gestel, David Bueno de Mesquita, Johan Herman Isings, Bernard F. Eilers, Hugo Polderman, Jan Ponstijn, Georg Rueter, Gerard Johan Staller, Willem Knip, André Vlaanderen, Bart Peizel, and Chris Lebeau.
Artistic style and contributions
Jan Visser Jr. achieved renown for his colorful flower still lifes, which reflected his Impressionist sensibilities. He also created landscapes, portraits, and figurative works, all characterized by his unique style. His versatility extended beyond painting; Visser was a lithographer, draftsman, environmental artist, and sculptor.
Legacy
Jan Visser Jr. passed away in 1938 at the age of 82, leaving behind a substantial body of work. His art is currently in the collection of the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem.
