Jan Sigurd Fuglestvedt, born on 19 May 1960 in Mysen, is a Norwegian climate scientist. He studied environmental chemistry at the University of Oslo where he completed his PhD in atmospheric chemistry in 1995 titled Model Studies of Indirect Effects on Climate Through Changes in the Chemistry of the Troposphere.[1]

Scientific work

Fuglestvedt has worked at CICERO Center for International Climate Research in Oslo since 1992. Initially, he worked closely with Ivar Isaksen[2] who pioneered the field of atmospheric chemistry.

Fuglestvedt has published more than 100 scientific papers[3], mostly on three topics:

  • atmospheric chemistry and climate interactions
  • the modelling of the climatic impacts of different human activities, notably the transportation sector
  • the effects of short-lived climate forcers and their role in mitigation strategies

Fuglestvedt is a member of the Impact and Science Group (ISG), Committee for Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). In 2014 he was appointed as a member of the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment's Climate Advisory Board.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Fuglestvedt has contributed to the IPCC in various roles since the 1990s. In 2010 Fuglestvedt was appointed as Lead Author of the chapter Anthropogenic and Natural Radiative Forcing in the Working Group I instalment of the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report[4]. He was also a member of the Core Writing Team for the Synthesis Report and contributing author to the Working Group III Summary for policy-makers and Technical Summary. In October 2015, Fuglestvedt was elected Vice-Chair of IPCC WGI [5] and as such has been active in preparing and writing reports in the 6th cycle of IPCC.
