James Wilsdon is a British interdisciplinary social scientist, [policy expert, professor of research policy at University College London (UCL), and Executive Director of the Research on Research Institute (RoRI).[1][2][3]

Education

Wilsdon studied at the University of Oxford gaining an MA in 1996. He undertook postgraduate studies at Middlesex University, obtaining with a Professional Doctorate (DProf) in 2004.[4][5]

Career

Between 2001 and 2008 Wilsdon held positions at Demos, firstly as Head of Strategy and then as Head of Science and Innovation.[2] During his tenure at Demos he was appointed to the Institute for Advanced Studies at Lancaster University.[6] In 2008, he became the founding Director of the Science Policy Centre[7] at the UK's Royal Society. In September 2013, he became chair of the Campaign for Social Science.[2]

Wilsdon joined the faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Sheffield in 2016 as Director of Impact & Faculty Director of Research & Innovation, later becoming the Digital Science Professor of Research Policy.[2] In 2018, he co-Founded the Research on Research Institute (RoRI) and became its founding Executive Director.[11][12] In 2023, Wilsdon was appointed Professor of Research Policy at University College London.[2]

Commentary and contributions

Wilsdon has made contributions to public discourse on research policy writing for the Guardian newspaper[13] as well as frequent commentary in journals such as Nature[14][15][16][17] and Science[18][19]
