James Knight (born November 4, 1965) is an American yoga teacher, movement educator, therapist, author, and the founder of Gentle Somatic Yoga, a method that integrates Somatic principles with traditional yoga practices. He has taught internationally through workshops, online programs, and retreats, and offers teacher training courses focused on therapeutic movement and self-care.

Early life and education

James Knight was born on November 4, 1965, in Fontana, California. At age nineteen, he moved to Paris, France, where he worked as a fashion model. He later returned to the United States and earned an Associate of Arts degree from Santa Rosa Junior College, with a focus on cultural anthropology.

Knight completed a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and Planning, graduating cum laude from Sonoma State University, with a minor in psychology. He also began graduate studies in ecopsychology at the same institution, during which he developed an interest in integrative healing and somatic practices.

He has received certifications in multiple modalities, including yoga instruction, Hanna Somatic Education (founded by Thomas Louis Hanna), Core Energetic Body Psychotherapy (inspired by John Pierrakos and Alexander Lowen), Ayurveda, biofeedback, therapeutic massage, and Watsu. Additionally, Knight is a certified Feng Shui consultant through the International Feng Shui School.

Career

While pursuing graduate studies at Sonoma State University, Knight served as a faculty member in both the psychology and physical education departments. He taught upper-division courses such as Eco-psychology, Wilderness Psychology, and The Psychology of Yoga.

During this time, he also began working in private practice as an integrative therapist, offering one-on-one sessions that incorporated clinical Hanna Somatics, body-oriented psychotherapy, bodywork, and other mindfulness-based techniques.

Knight completed Ayurvedic massage training at the Chopra Center at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. He later founded two wellness centers: the Awareness Research and Training Institute in San Francisco (established in 1996) and the Carlsbad Center for Wellness in San Diego (established in 2006).

In 2010, Knight developed Gentle Somatic Yoga, a movement method that integrates principles of Hanna Somatic Education with elements of yoga and other therapeutic movement techniques. He has since facilitated training programs, workshops, and retreats both in person and online.

His collaborative work has included programs with institutions such as the Maryland University of Integrative Health, the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT), the Association for Hanna Somatic Education, the Yoga Teachers Association (YTA), Integral Yoga Therapy School, Inner Peace Yoga Therapy, YogaUOnline, Yogaville (Satchidananda Ashram), and Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia, Canada.

Knight is also recognized by Yoga Alliance as an approved continuing education provider through his Gentle Somatic Yoga teacher training programs, workshops, and retreats.

In addition to his work in somatic education, Knight has also pursued interests in architecture, interior and landscape design, and nature photography.

Gentle Somatic Yoga

Gentle Somatic Yoga (GSY) is a movement-based practice developed by James Knight that integrates traditional yoga postures with elements of Hanna Somatic Education. The method emphasizes interoception (internal body sensing) and neuromuscular reeducation as tools for reducing muscular tension and enhancing somatic awareness for self regulation.

A core component of the practice involves therapeutic movement sequences known as Somatic Movement Flows. These flows are designed to help reorganize habitual muscular patterns through exploring slow, mindful body shapes. They incorporate the principle of pandiculation, a technique aimed at resetting muscle tone, increasing flexibility, improving mobility, and manage the effects of chronic stress on the nervous system.

The development of Gentle Somatic Yoga was influenced by the work of Thomas Hanna (Hanna Somatics), Eleanor Criswell Hanna (Somatic Yoga), Moshe Feldenkrais (Feldenkrais Method), John Pierrakos founder and director of the Institute of Core Energetics (1973-2001), co-founder of the Bioenergetics Institute in New York, NY with Lowen (1955-1970), and co-founder of The Pathwork Center, Phoenicia, NY, in association with his wife, Eva Pierrakos(Core Energetics), Eva Pierrakos (Pathwork), and Barbara Brennan (Brennan Healing Science).[1]

The method is practiced by individuals seeking approaches to address stress, chronic pain, trauma, and movement limitations. Knight offers a 100-hour Gentle Somatic Yoga teacher training program, available in person, online, and via livestream. The training is intended for yoga teachers, bodyworkers, therapists, and individuals interested in movement-based self-care practices.

Knight is the author of the Gentle Somatic Yoga Encyclopedia, which outlines the foundational principles, techniques, and applications of his movement method. The book is used as a reference in his teacher training programs and workshops.
