James Kennedy (born 15 March 1980) is a singer, songwriter, musician and author from South Wales, UK. He was formerly the singer / guitarist in the Alternative Rock band Kyshera (disbanded in 2018), he has released 4 solo albums and is the author of the rock memoir 'Noise Damage - My Life as a Rock'n'Roll Underdog'.[1]. Kennedy also runs the independent record label and music publishing company, Konic Records[2]. Notable features of his work are diverse musical eclecticism and topical lyrics[3]. His latest album is the politically themed 'Make Anger Great Again' released on September 25th 2020[4].

Kyshera

Kennedy formed the alternative rock band, Kyshera, in 2005[5]. During the bands ten year history they released three albums and toured with bands including Snot[6], Delain[7], Boy Hits Car[8] and Electric Mary[9]. The band had several lineup changes with its final lineup consisting of James Kennedy on Guitar and Vocals, Matt Warr on Bass and Glyn Bateman on Drums[10]. Kyshera disbanded in 2018[11].

Musical Style

Throughout his career, Kennedy has released music in many different genres including progressive rock[12], experimental music[13], alternative rock[14] and acoustic music[15]. His early releases with Kyshera featured frequent use of odd time signatures, multiple genres, unconventional song structures and use of electronic sounds[16] - similarly, his debut solo album experimented with musique concrete, polyrhythms, noise and microtones[17]. However, his style has become more song orientated on subsequent albums which have included soft rock and acoustic songs[18]. Kennedy's latest solo album 'Make Anger Great Again' is a return to his earlier heavy sound but without the experimental elements[19].

Personal life

At the age of ten, Kennedy was diagnosed with advanced bilateral cholesteatoma, a destructive expanding growth in both of his middle ears which required 3 major ear operations. As a result of the surgery, Kennedy lost 40% of his hearing in both ears and developed constant white noise Tinnitus in his left ear[20]. In 2013 he won a court case against the record label 'Rising Records' over the release of the Kyshera album 'Made in China'[21]. Kennedy has spoken openly about struggling with depression[22] and he has abstained from drinking alcohol since May 23rd 2018[23]
