James D. Hamilton (born 1950) is an American healthcare executive, educator, and author whose career has focused on medical group administration, ambulatory care development, and healthcare strategy in the Midwest. He has held senior administrative roles within hospital systems and physician organizations, taught in higher-education business and healthcare programs, authored books on healthcare reform and ambulatory care, and participated in civic and historical initiatives. Early life and education
Hamilton began his professional career in clinical microbiology at Defiance Hospital in Defiance, Ohio, and later worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his early work involved hospital laboratory services and participation in laboratory automation initiatives.[1] [4]
He earned a bachelor’s degree from Defiance College and later completed a Master of Business Administration in finance at the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne. Healthcare administration
After transitioning from laboratory work into healthcare administration, Hamilton held positions in orthopedic practice management before joining Midelfort Clinic in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He served in an administrative role during the organization’s transition into the Mayo Clinic Health System in Rochester, Minnesota.[5]
In the mid-1990s, Hamilton joined Memorial Health System in South Bend, Indiana, where he was involved in outpatient facility development, physician practice management, and healthcare reimbursement strategies during a period of industry restructuring.[6]
He later served as Chief Administrative Officer of Integrated Medical Associates within United Memorial Health System in Greenville, Michigan.[4]
Hamilton subsequently held executive roles with Ambulatory Management Services, Westerville, Ohio, a division of Trinity Health, Livonia Michigan, and later with Parkview Health in Fort Wayne, Indiana.[5][7]
Following his tenure at Parkview Health, he founded Ambulatory Medical Management LLC, providing consulting services to medical groups and health systems on a national basis.[2][8]
In 2010, Hamilton was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Midwest Community Health Associates in northwest Ohio, where he led the organization through its acquisition by Parkview Health.[2][7]
In 2012, Hamilton became Executive Director of Caylor-Nickel Clinic in Bluffton, Indiana, overseeing physician and ambulatory services during an organizational transition to Lutheran Health Network, Fort Wayne, Indiana and Community Health System (Tennessee).[5]
