James D'Angelo is an American musician, composer, and educator, who has worked extensively in the UK's music scene since 1986.[1][2] He has taken on multiple roles throughout his career, including those of a composer, performer, educator, and workshop leader.[3][4]
Early Life and Education
D'Angelo initially attended Columbia University for a year before transferring to the Manhattan School of Music. There, he obtained both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees.[1] Subsequently, he received a PhD from New York University, with his research focusing on the works of German composer Paul Hindemith[1]
Career
D'Angelo debuted as a pianist at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City in 1966, marking a notable point in his career.[5] He has created an array of compositions, including over sixty songs, numerous chamber pieces, choral music, and works for organ and piano.[4] His compositions have been performed in various locales, such as New York, London, Milan, and Helsinki, and have even been showcased on BBC Television.[6]
Sound Therapy
In addition to his musical pursuits, D'Angelo has made significant contributions to the field of therapeutic sound and sound healing therapies.[2][3][4][7] Since 1992, he has developed and facilitated therapeutic sound and movement workshops across Great Britain, Europe, and the United States.[2] These workshops delve into the theory and practice of therapeutic sound, primarily using vocal toning, chanting, and over toning, supplemented with tuning forks.[6]
Publications and Teaching
D'Angelo has authored two books: "The Healing Power of the Human Voice" and "Seed Sounds for Tuning the Chakras."[4] His books explore the link between language elements—vowels, consonants—and the chakra energy centers.[6] Having held teaching positions at prestigious institutions like the New York College of Music, New York University, the City University of New York, and Goldsmiths College, London, D'Angelo is regarded as an master on sound healing therapies.[2][3][4][6] He continues to perform in concerts, often collaborating with singer Jenna Monroe in a cabaret duo.[6]
