James Bennett is a British Fantasy Award[1] winning author of Fantasy and Horror.

Biography

James Bennett is a British born author who was raised in Sussex and South Africa. He was originally published in the early 2000s in small press magazines.[2] He entered the mainstream SFF market in 2016 with his series The Ben Garston Novels[3] from Orbit Books[4] (these were titled "Chasing Embers",[5] "Raising Fire"[6] and "Burning Ashes",[7] published in 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively). The first volume, "Chasing Embers" was shortlisted for the Sydney J. Bounds Award for Best Newcomer at the British Fantasy Awards in 2017.[8]

Since then, James has had several short stories published in international fantasy and horror magazines such as The Dark magazine[9] as well as in several anthologies. He was featured in The Books on the Hill dyslexia-friendly books for adults campaign[10][11] in 2023 alongside bestselling authors Bernard Cornwell and Peter James with his Arthurian novella "The Dust of the Red Rose Knight".[12]

In 2023, James Bennett won the British Fantasy Award for Best Short Fiction[13][14] for his story "Morta", a tale of a teenage alien in love which appeared in the shortlisted US anthology "The Book of Queer Saints".[15] His short story collection "Preaching to the Perverted"[16] came out in September 2024 from Lethe Press.[17]

James Bennett lives in Spain where he works as an English teacher. He is represented by Helen Lane of the Ki Agency,[18] London.

Personal Life

James Bennett identifies as a cis gay male within the LGBTQIA+ community.[19][20]
