James Aaron Ellul (born 3 July 1995) is a Maltese Partit Nazzjonalista politician. He also works as a journalist and a writer.

He was elected as a member of the Floriana Local Council in May 2015 [1] and was re-elected for a second consecutive time in 2019 [2][3]. In May 2015 he became the youngest Local Councillor to be ever elected in Floriana. Ellul started serving as a Minority Leader in Floriana in 2016.

Studies, Personal life and family

Ellul studied at St Augustine's College in Pietà, Ġ.F. Abela Junior College, and he graduated as a Bachelor of Art with Honours in Maltese language at the University of Malta. His thesis studied the art of literary terms used in the speeches made by the Former Prime Minister of Malta Eddie Fenech Adami [4]

James Aaron Ellul family goes back in Floriana since 1881 by the business named FIRM Lorenzo Ellul. The business in fact was set up by his great great grandfather Lorenzo Ellul in 1881. Lorenzo was a tailor, In Valletta, close to St Joachim. Then he used to import sewing items which his wife used to sell. That is how FIRM Lorenzo Ellul was born. His wife was Karmena Quattromani [5].

James Aaron is married to Sarah Jane neè Sammut [6].

Journalism

Ellul started working as a journalist with Net News in 2014[7][8]. James Aaron Ellul also works as a newscaster for Net News. He is also a producer of a programme on Net TV called PROFILI. PROFILI is a programme of interviews, meeting some familiar faces that have impacted the lives of many across the archipelago and beyond[9][10]. In 2019 Ellul also formed part of a programme which discussed local football [11].

Politics

In his student years, James Aaron Ellul was quite active and occupied numerous roles in a local student organisation SDM (Studenti Demokristjani Maltin) and also got involved in Partit Nazzjonalista's youth wing MŻPN (Moviment Żgħażagħ Partit Nazzjonalista). He served as a Social Policy Officer [12][13]

At the age of 17, Ellul also got involved in local politics where he joined the Partit Nazzjonalista local committee in Floriana. At the mere age of 18 Ellul was elected in the post of President. He is still the youngest President to ever be elected in a local committee. James Aaron Ellul served in the role for almost 7 years before submitting his resignation in order to contest the Maltese general elections in 2022.

Local Councillor

On 11 April 2015,[14] Ellul was elected as a Local Councillor for his hometown of Floriana, becoming the youngest elected Local Councillor in this locality

Six years later, on 25 May 2019,[15] Ellul was re-elected in the Floriana Local Council after obtaining the most votes from the PN candidates and also obtaining 88% of the votes casted to the PN. He served his second term as Minority leader|Minority Leader as Partit Nazzjonalista did not manage to obtain the majority of seats in the Floriana Local Council.


His work in Floriana is mainly focused on the quest of regeneration of the locality [16]. He has been working on proper investment in Floriana, and that the Government should discuss issues with the Local Council, especially on National issues that effect the residents, like for example the investment in St.Anne's Street in Floriana. [17].

Until 2022 he put forward over 55 motion (parliamentary procedure) in the Council. One of them was about a proper investment and upkeeping in Jubilee Grove in Floriana. [18][19].

James Aaron Ellul's work is also considered to be instrumental regarding the protection of the Granaries in Floriana. In a motion he stated that the government authorities are not taking ownership of the historical site and that the square is yet to receive a damage assessment over its constant use as a mass meeting place [20][21].

Ellul also applied pressure for a security camera to be placed looking toward Porte des Bombes. James Aaron Ellul insisted that the camera should again be positioned to safeguard the patrimony of the Floriana locality [22].

In December 2020, Partit Nazzjonalista Floriana Minority Leader announced that part of Triq l-Argotti will be named after the late Maltese poet, writer and lecturer Oliver Friggieri. The proposal was put forward by Ellul within the Local Council, in November 2020. [23]

Candidate for General Election

James Aaron Ellul also contested the Malta General Elections 2022. He was a candidate on the First Electoral District, comprising Valletta, Floriana, Hamrun, Marsa, Malta|Marsa, Pietà, Malta|Pietà, Gwardamanġa|Guardamangia and Santa Venera [24].

He managed to obtain a good number of votes, however the huge defeat that Partit Nazzjonalista sufferred in the election left a mark on how many Nationalists MP's got elected from the First Electoral District [25].

Honours

James Aaron Ellul was one of the 10 most outstanding young people for 2020. Ellul won the honour: Political, Legal and/or Governmental Affairs[26].

Publications

In 2022, Ellul published a study regarding Malta’s Electoral System, with a Focus On the 2008 Electoral Result[27]. During the begining of 2023, James Aaron Ellul announced that a study about Eddie Fenech Adami is going to be published[28].
