Jake Law is a New Zealand politician.
Early life
Jake Law was born in Army Bay (A suburb of Whangaparāoa), and grew up in the Hibiscus Coast. From age 12 he attended Wentworth College, Auckland in Gulf Harbour. He completed a Bachelor of Arts Majoring in Chinese Language and Culture from Auckland University of Technology in 2016, and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) from The University of Auckland in 2017. He taught locally and internationally for more than 7 years before entering local government. Jake is the eldest grandson of Former Rodney District Council Mayor John Law.
Political career
Jake was elected ASA (Albany Students' Association) President in 2022 while studying social policy.[1]. Following the Amalgamation of all 10 Massey University student associations including Massey University Students' Association (Palmerston North) and Massey Wellington Students' Association in 2022.[2] Jake was appointed as the General Student President 2023 of the new single student association representing all Massey University Students, Te Tira Ahu Pae (formerly MUSAF[3]).
During the 2022 Auckland Council Local Government elections, Jake ran for the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board, and the Albany Ward[4]. The first stage of voting results initially showed him as unsuccessful, but following this he gained a lead and was elected to the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board.[5]
Hibiscus and Bays Local Board
Jake was elected to the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board in October 2022. He attended the contentious "Stop Co-governance" tour in Ōrewa on March 18, 2023, and was critical of the misinformation being purported by tour host Julian Batchelor[6]. Jake has expressed that he welcomes a robust conversation around co-governance, and has argued for a fact based discussion on co-governance and Treaty of Waitangi concerns, rather than the misinformation presented by Batchelor.[7]
