Professor Dato' Dr.Jafri Malin abdullah is an Malaysian neurosurgeon. He is a physician specializing in neurosurgery in Kelantan, Malaysia, who is the founding/former Head of the Department of Neurosciences at Universiti Sains Malaysia School of Medical Sciences and Director of Center for Neuroscience Services and Research Medical Campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia in Kelantan, Malaysia.

He is currently a Professor of Neurosciences, Department of Neurosciences[1] and the Chairman of the Braind and Behaviour Cluster, (BBC)[2], School Of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Biography

Jafri Malin attended a high school in Kelantan, Malaysia and received his M.D. Doctor of Medicine in 1986 from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. In 1994, he was awarded the Diplomate Certification of Specialization in Neurosurgery from the University of Ghent, Belgium and later he obtained his Ph.D in Biomedical Sciences (Magna Cum Laude) in 1995.

He is a Fellow of the Academy Science Malaysia, the American College of Surgeons[3], the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh[4], the American Association of Neurological Surgeons [5], the Royal Society of Medicine (UK) and World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies.

He was awarded the prestigious Young National Malaysian Scientist Award in 1999 and Top Research Scientist Award, Academy Science Malaysia in 2013 both by the Prime Minister of that period.

Part of his cluster’s research are focused on new treatments in the field of human pluripotential stem cells, neurooncology, medicinal chemistry in the field of biodegradable wafer antibiotics, drugs for movement disorders, CNS tuberculosis, epilepsy and pain as well as ethnopharmacology. Together with the Transcranial Magnetic stimulation facilities and complete animal behaviour lab his other clusters concentrates on comparative as well as neuropsychology and behavioral neurosciences.

Besides being responsible in setting up labs for functional magnetic resonance imaging, magnetoencephalography, high density electroencephalography, neurogenetics, rodent animal behavior, electrophysiology, stem cell culture and primary cell laboratories his most recently research activity is in the field of brain mapping and neuroinformatics.

He graduated more than 68 neurosurgeons, neurologists and 46 neuroscientists via the Masters of Surgery (Neurology), Advance Master Internal Medicine (Neurology), Master of Science (Neuroscience) and PhD Neuroscience and recently initiated Asia’s first Integrated Doctor of Neuroscience Program as well as the first joint Clinical Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience’s programme.

He has established more than 20 neuroscience clubs in secondary and primary schools in Malaysia and is the Malaysian International Brain Bee coordinator.

He has been the member of the board of Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutic[6], Member of the G20+ World Brain Mapping and Therapeutics Initiative (G20+ WBMTI) Committee (representing Malaysia) and the Vice Chairman of the Malaysian-SBMT and co-founder of Malaysian Brain Mapping Initiative as part of the G20+ WBMTI. He is the President of the Society for Neuroscience, USA Malaysian (Kelantan) Chapter.
