JEC was founded by Darwan M. Purba, MD, Prof. Istiantoro, MD (deceased), Djoko Sarwono, MD (deceased), and Bondan Hariono, MD.[1]

History

On February 1, 1984 under the name Klinik Mata Jakarta (Jakarta Eye Clinic) in Menteng, Jakarta. The aim of establishing an eye clinic was to reduce the blindness rate in Indonesia. On February 1, 1993, the clinic was officially transformed into the Jakarta Eye Center - Eye Hospital (JEC) as it moved to Jl. Cik Ditiro no. 46. It keeps growing and expands its service to other cities by establishing new branches or collaborating with existing local eye clinics. As JEC evolved from a single hospital to an eye care group, the management decided to rename as JEC Eye Hospitals and Clinics (JEC) in 2018.[2]

In 2005, Dr. Purba initiated the formation of an eye hospital association in the Southeast Asia region as a forum for mutual learning and sharing about best practices and tackling challenges in the eye care industry. As an embodiment of the initiation, ASEAN Association of Eye Hospitals (AAEH) was established by JEC together with four eye hospitals from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines. The Association holds a meeting every year to discuss the latest developments in the field of ophthalmology and support each other in improving patient care.
