JAYTHEDØN (stylized in all caps with the ø character, also referred to as Clyde) is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer that incorporates elements of hip hop, trap music, R&B, and alternative music. Entering from the underground scene in the early 2020s, JAYTHEDØN uses a cinematic production style reminiscent of the early 2010's aesthetic.
Early life
JAYTHEDØN was born Jaden Taylor on November 21, 2002 in Norfolk, Virginia. Raised in Chesapeake, Virginia, he was influenced early on by artists such as Logic (rapper), Fergie (singer), Lil Wayne, MadeinTYO, and Ugly God. He began writing lyrics and producing beats in his teens, using free software and recording in a makeshift home studio.
Career
2016–2022: Early releases and buzz
JAYTHEDØN began releasing music in 2016, originally going by the name Frybo Exxcon on platforms like SoundCloud and YouTube, gaining attention in his school for his lyricism and production. He soon changed his name to JAYTHEDØN in 2018.
His first independent EP, BURN FOREVER, DON, was released in 2019, earning praise from indie music blogs and landing him performances at local showcases and open mics.
2020–2022: Breakthrough and SANTANA
In 2021, he released his debut mixtape album, SANTANA. It quickly reached over 100k streams across Apple Music, Spotify, and Soundcloud. It featured collaborations with yvngxchris and others. The album originally had 22 songs, and was formatted to sound as if it were a horror film. It included elements and samples from movies like Hostel (2005 film), A Serbian Film, and Lilja 4-Ever, which inevitably lead to the album being denied clearance. The album was then condensed into 13 songs, with the other songs containing the samples being removed entirely.[1] In 2022, he released SANTANA: VOLUME II, with 22 songs and a runtime of 53 minutes. The album continued and expanded upon the themes, character work, and conceptual aesthetic from SANTANA. It was promoted as an interpretation of the Veneer theory, told from the perspective of a college student. It featured collaborations with SSGKobe and others.
2023–present: blond and global reach
In 2023, JAYTHEDØN released his third album, blond. Critics noted a shift in his sound, incorporating more electronic and experimental elements.[2]The album contains Russian style drums and other instruments in the production. In interviews, the album was promoted as a more direct, less conceptual overcomplication, and also involved branding.[2]
Musical style and influences
JAYTHEDØN cites influences including Logic (rapper), Fergie (singer), and MadeinTYO.[3] His persona is referred to as "Kremlin."[2]
