J. Riccardo Benavides (born 1955) is a Mexican-American event designer and planner based in San Francisco, Bay Area.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and education

Benavides was born in Northern California in 1955. Riccardo is the fourth of five children, with 3 older sisters and one younger brother. He studied Interior Design at the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design in San Francisco.[5]

Career

Riccardo is a renowned event designer and planner[6][7] and founder of an event management company, Ideas Events & Rentals where is also serves as the creative director.[8][9][10]

Benavides has designed events such as the Opening Night Galas for the San Francisco Opera[11][12], San Francisco Fall Art Show [13][14], The Fine Arts Museum Oscar de la Renta Retrospective [15], and The San Francisco Conservatory of Music Gala.[16]

He worked at a variety of retail establishments before he was plucked by the former HR Director of the SF Hyatt Embarcadero (now the Hyatt Regency) who asked join the hotel as an assistant restaurant manager. From there he became restaurant manager, worked in the catering and sales departments. Later, he became Director of Catering and then Director of Events.[5]

Riccardo started his company, Ideas Event Styling in 1992 after his long tenure at the Hyatt.[1] In the Bay Area, he is most known for his many years designing Opening Night Galas for the San Francisco Opera[17][18] and the San Francisco Ballet[19][20]; and has been the event designer for numerous events such as the Benjamin Millepied's Ballet[21], The Fine Arts Museum Oscar de la Renta Retrospective[15], San Francisco Edgewood, The League to Save Lake Tahoe Fashion Show, The Fall Antique Show, The San Francisco Conservatory of Music Gala, as well as other fundraisers including fashion shows, dinners and openings for the SF Opera[22] and SF Ballet.[23][24][25]

His corporate clients range between the St. Regis Hotel San Francisco to the Air Carriers Purchasing Conference, Airbnb, Facebook, Netflix and Dropbox.[1] As of 2023, Riccardo has been appointed as a Commissioner to the San Francisco Arts Commission.[26]
