Ivan Jacob Osadchiy (born July 22, 1949, Verkhny Khomutets, Rostov region) - Soviet, Ukrainian and American scientist, inventor, owner of 3 patents[1] and the state award of VDNKh of the USSR, author of 4 books and many scientific articles in the field viticulture and winemaking[2]. The main direction of scientific research is the production of "hard-to-graft" vine seedlings and the frost resistance of vine plants. PhD of Agricultural Sciences.
Biography
Early Life
Born in the USSR in a family of teachers. After graduating from school, he entered the Novocherkassk Engineering and Reclamation Institute. He was interested in scientific research from the early days of his studies, focusing on biophysics. After graduating from the institute, he was admitted to graduate school to the class of the world-famous scientist Ryabchun O. In 1975, while doing an internship at the Lomonosov Moscow State University he concentrated his research in biophysics and plant physiology.
Professional Career
In 1983, Osadchiy I. J. was invited to work as a senior scientific researcher at the Yalta Research Institute of Grapes and Wine "Magarach" under the guidance of Professor and world-famous scientist Golodriga P. Y. This institution is one of the largest research institutes in the world focusing on viticulture and winemaking. Osadchiy I. J. concentrated on producing new varieties of grapes, introducing new technologies for the production of grafted grapevines, and continued to work on issues of frost resistance of grapevines.
In 1984, most of the Crimean vineyards were damaged by frost. Thanks to the technologies of Osadchy I.J., it was possible to quickly restore the damaged vineyards and save the state millions of rubles. In 1988, he received his PhD degree. From 1990 to 1996, he headed the Grape Propagation Department at the Magarach Research Institute. Several dozen researchers and laboratory assistants conducted research under his leadership. Several fundamentally new technologies for the production of grafted grapevine have been developed and dozens of scientific papers have been published. He was awarded the VDNKh medal of the USSR for the development of a new technology for the production of grafted grapevine using polyethylene film.
In 1996, one of the leading nursery companies invited Osadchy I. J. to work in the USA under the "extraordinary specialist" program. In the USA, Osadchy I.J. has implemented his technologies in the production of grafted grapevine. He continues scientific research and collaborates with scientists at the University of California, Davis.
