Ioannis P. Georgakopoulos (Greek: Ιωάννης Παναγιώτου Γεωργακόπουλος) is a Greek dentist and academic whose research has focused on dental implantology, osseointegration, bone regeneration and implant treatment.

Education and academic career

Georgakopoulos is listed as a registered dentist with the Athens Dental Association (Οδοντιατρικός Σύλλογος Αττικής).[1]

In 2015, Georgakopoulos completed a doctoral dissertation at the University of Patras School of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine. The dissertation, Osseo-integration assessment by means of digital panoramic radiography and cone beam CT due to platelet rich plasma employment and graft placement in jaw bone defects, examined osseointegration, platelet-rich plasma and bone grafting in dental treatment.[2]

Georgakopoulos is Director of Postgraduate Education at PgO-UCAM in Greece.[3]

Literary award

Georgakopoulos's book 9 χρόνια και 9 μήνες (ISBN 9786188755307) received a First Prize for Completed Work (Α΄ Βραβείο Ολοκληρωμένου Έργου) in the 2025 literary competition of the Union of Greek Writers, a literary association founded in 1930.[4]

Research

Georgakopoulos has published research concerning dental implants, osseointegration, platelet concentrates and bone regeneration.

A 2014 study co-authored by Georgakopoulos examined the effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on osseointegration of oral implants using digital panoramic radiography and texture-based analysis.[5] The study was one of four studies that specifically evaluated PRP during implant placement in a 2018 systematic review published in Clinical Oral Implants Research; the review reported a positive effect of PRP on bone formation in two of the four, including the Georgakopoulos et al. study.[6] As of 24 September 2026, OpenAlex records the study as cited by 23 subsequent works, with a field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) of 2.998.[7] The study has also been cited in reviews published in Bone Research (2016) and BMC Oral Health (2021), and in a 2020 long-term clinical study in the Journal of Clinical Medicine that did not itself find a positive long-term effect of PRP on implant outcomes.[8][9][10]

A 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis co-authored by Georgakopoulos examined the clinical use of platelet-rich plasma as an adjunct in the regenerative treatment of infrabony periodontal defects, screening 73 articles and including 15 studies in its meta-analysis, and reported potential clinical benefits from adjunctive PRP when used with bone substitutes.[11] A 2020 independent methodological appraisal, conducted by researchers at the National Cancer Institute of Naples, the University of Campania, and the University of Milan, assessed 14 systematic reviews on this topic using the AMSTAR quality checklist and rated the 2018 review among the three highest-quality of the fourteen assessed.[12] As of 24 September 2026, OpenAlex records the review as cited by 46 subsequent works, with a field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) of 1.41.[13] The review has also been cited in subsequent periodontal-regeneration literature, including a 2026 systematic review and network meta-analysis in Odontology.[14]

IPG-DET technique

Georgakopoulos has published research describing the IPG-DET technique, a proposed approach to implant placement and bone augmentation in the posterior maxilla. The technique involves intentional perforation of the Schneiderian membrane during implant placement and the use of concentrated growth factors and bone-grafting materials without conventional sinus-floor elevation.[15]

The technique was subsequently discussed in professional dental literature and presented at the 24th BaSS Congress in 2019, where Georgakopoulos served as a chairman of a plenary session and presented the IPG-DET sinus technique.[16]

A 2019 prospective clinical study co-authored by Georgakopoulos evaluated the IPG-DET protocol in 48 patients receiving a total of 85 implants, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) before treatment and at 8 months post-operatively to quantify new bone formation via a computer-based image-analysis method. The study reported mean new bone formation of 5.9 ± 0.9 mm² per implant and implant stability quotient (ISQ) values of 62.3–71.7, with all implants reported as successfully osseointegrated at the 8-month assessment. The study was subsequently cited in independent research on sinus floor elevation techniques, including a 2024 study on osseodensification published in Biomimetics.[17][18]

A later case report concerning the technique and posterior maxillary reconstruction was deposited in the University of Bari institutional research repository.[19]

Professional activities

In 2018, Georgakopoulos was the keynote speaker at Professionals Day at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. The university's School of Dental Medicine magazine identified him as a professor at the University of Bari "Aldo Moro", Italy, and reported that his presentation was titled "Innovative regenerative approaches to Implant Dentistry".[20]
