Ioan Pleș (also credited as John Plesh; 1956 – 2010) was a Romanian experimental filmmaker, poet, and visual artist. He was born in Pâncota, Romania, and later lived in the United States, where he died in Los Angeles.
He was a central member of the https://kinema-ikon.net/ [kinema ikon] collective in Arad, Romania, an avant-garde film and multimedia group active from the 1970s. Pleș’s work is known for its radical formal experimentation with 16mm film, including painting, scratching, burning, solarization, and overexposure of the film strip.
Career
Between 1977 and 1982, Ioan Pleș created a number of non-narrative experimental films within kinema ikon. These films are now considered significant contributions to Romanian and Eastern European avant-garde cinema during the socialist period.
Notable works include:
- Poluare (1977)
- Feux follets (1977)
- Omagiu lui Dali (1977)
- Panta Rhei (1979)
- Iluminări (1981)
- Solarizare (1981)
- Emergență (1982)
His films were created using direct manipulation of film stock and were largely abstract, often reflecting the influence of surrealism and materialist cinema.
Later Life
In later years, Pleș emigrated to the United States, where he continued working on poetry and visual art under the name John Plesh. He passed away in Los Angeles in 2010.
Legacy
Pleș's work was featured in retrospectives and academic texts, including the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival and the book Experimental Cinemas in State Socialist Eastern Europe. His films remain part of kinema ikon's archive and are increasingly studied as part of Romania's underground and avant-garde cinema movement.
