Ilija Ćelović

Ilija Ćelović also spelled Elia Chielovich (Serbian Cyrillic:Илија Ћеловић; c. 1840 - 1910) was one of many early Serbs from Montenegro who came to Canada as a pioneer. He operated the Occidental Billiard Saloon in Victoria, British Columbia, according to records.[1]Before that, he was in San Francisco where he founded the "Slavonic-Greek-Russian Benevolent Society of the Orthodox Catholic Church" with other like-minded Serbs, Greeks and Russians in 1864.[2][3][4]

In 1894 Ilija Ćelović resigned from his post as trustee [5]of the Serbian organization, [6]and in 1897 made his way north to Dawson City where the Klondike Gold Rush was discovered. There, after Gold panning for a while and opened a merchant store. At the end of the gold rush, he moved to Victoria, where he bought and ran a saloon.
