Dr.Ihor Huk (born January 22, 1952, Gdansk, Poland) is a Ukraine vascular surgeon, transplant surgeon, and training doctor, based in Vienna known for his published works on biological functions of nitric oxide.[1] on vascular system[2] including Circulation (medical journal)[3], PNAS USA, and British Journal of Surgery. Huk studied medicine in Gdansk (1969–1975) and then specialised in vascular surgery at the University of Vienna.

Ihor Huk is the former Director of Experimental Vascular Laboratory, Department of Surgery in Medical University Vienna [4] since 1994, the Chairman of the Division of Vascular Surgery since 2013, and acting (current) member of the National Academy of Sciences in Ukraine [5] since 2000.

Huk studied the issues of diagnosis and complications regarding the surgical treatment of aortic ischemia, the effect of nitric oxide on the vascular wall, reperfusion injury of organs, and the impact of amino acids on healthy cell development.

Huk has completed more than 50,000 surgeries, including abdominal, vascular and transplantations, and over 1000 kidney, liver and arteries transplants throughout his career. Professor Doctor Ihor Huk primarily practices at the Vienna General Hospital (VGH) [6] and has also worked as a Chief Physician at the Wiener Privatklinik (WPK) for over 30 years, where his focus on vascular surgery includes operations on carotid arteries to prevent strokes, aneurysm operations, and surgery on arteries threatened with occlusion or rupture, as well as reconstructive surgery on vessels (bypass, shunt and stent).

Public Life

Dr Huk helped train many young scientists from Ukraine at Austrian medical and scientific institutes. Dr Huk is involved in the Transplantation Centre in Zaporizhya [7], Ukraine, through his teaching of Ukrainian doctors and surgeons in Austria.

In 1996, Professor Doctor Ihor Huk took part in organising an Austrian government-funded charity event to support the Clinic of the University of Vienna programme for treating Ukrainian children with cancer [8] following the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

Dr Huk successfully performed stent surgery on the Patriarch Filaret (Patriarch Filaret)in Vienna in 2015. [9]
