Ider-Od Bat-Erdene (born on April 26, 1987) is a comedian and tech entrepreneur from Mongolia. He is most known for his comedy content, and is one of the first stand-up comedians in Mongolia. He is also a prominent spokesperson from his generation and is seen as an influencer. Ider-Od is an entrepreneur who co-founded CallPro, a cloud call center service provider, and Hippocards, a language-learning mobile app. He also co-founded FARO Group in central Ulaanbaatar, an education-focused enterprise that offers post-secondary college programs, and language courses.

Early Life and Education

Ider-Od Bat-Erdene was born in Mörön, Khövsgöl Aimag, Mongolia on April 26, 1987. He attended the 3rd kindergarten in Mörön, and graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Specialized 11th Secondary School in Ulaanbaatar. In his comedy content, Ider-Od mentions that he was an average student who never won awards or Olympiads, state competitions for accelerated students in Mongolia. Ider-Od was a few months old when his father, a pilot for MIAT Mongolian Airlines, passed away after a plane crash in 1987. Ider-Od grew up with his grandfather and mother Oyungerel Tsedevdamba, a former member of the State Great Khural and a current member of the Democratic Party (Mongolia). Ider-Od started learning English when he spent a year in Palo Alto, California at the age of 16 when his mother attended Stanford University. Ider-Od often emphasizes his grandfather's influence on him while growing up- he spent most summers in his childhood in the Mongolian countryside with his grandfather learning Mongolian history and the Mongolian nomadic lifestyle.

The passing of his father had a huge impact on shaping Ider-Od's life and career. In his application essay for University of Kansas, he mentions that his father's passing influenced him to pursue Aerospace engineering so that he could "make future aircraft safer"[1]. He attended the University of Kansas from 2006 to 2011.

Career

After returning to Mongolia in 2011, Ider-Od worked as a MIAT Mongolian Airlines Aircraft maintenance engineer for 3 years. He then quit MIAT Airlines to pursue his own business. He has quoted that he had several part-time jobs while growing up; his first-ever job was as a waiter at California Restaurant in central Ulaanbaatar, then in University, he worked as a library and laboratory assistant.

Stand-up Comedy

As a sophomore at the University of Kansas, Ider-Od attended an international student retreat held in Colorado, where he had to attend a talent show to represent his country. He told a few Mongolian jokes on stage and was well received by the audience. After the show, two of his American friends applauded him and suggested he should watch stand-up comedy online. Ider-Od then discovered what stand-up comedy was for the first time[2].

After he quit his job as an aircraft maintenance engineer, he opened an office in central Ulaanbaatar. Across the street from his office, he came across a sign that read "$2 Beer for Free Comedy" outside a lounge/bar named "Basement". Inside, Mongolian comedian Batbileg Batts was performing for no more than 10 people. After the show, Ider-Od approached Batts and asked if he could join Batt's comedy shows[3]. Along with another comedian by the name Degi, the three comedians founded UB Comedy, the first-ever stand-up comedy club in Mongolia.

In 2018, Ider-Od hosted his biggest solo show, which had a 1,500 people audience, and the content was sold to Mongolia's most popular streaming platform Ori.

Shark Tank Mongolia

Ider-Od was the official host for two seasons of Sony Entertainment Shark Tank Mongolia on Mongol HD TV from 2018 to 2019.

CallPro

In 2014, Ider-Od founded CallPro, a cloud call service provider, a Software as a service, which now has over 1000 enterprise clients in Mongolia. Ider-Od quoted in an interview that CallPro has been profitable from its first year-end and it later received an investment from a Japanese investor[4].
