Hwang-Long Pan (c=潘皇龍; born September 9, 1945).[1][2][3] is a Taiwanese composer. . In 1989, he founded the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM)-Taiwan Section, now known as the ISCM-Chinese Taipei Section[4], and served as the chairman of the Asian Composers League. He is committed to promoting Taiwanese music and music groups to various places and organizing international music festivals[5][6]

Early life and education

Hwang-Long Pan was born in Puli Township, Nantou County, Taiwan. He graduated from Taipei Teachers College (now renamed National Taipei University of Education) and National Taiwan Normal University Department of Music, and then studied at the Musikakademie und Musikhochschule in Zürich. In 1976, he received his diploma in composition and later focused on 20th century composition at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hanover and Hochschule der Künste, Berlin. His work Woodwind Quartet: Cause and Effect won the Juergen Ponto Kompositions Wettbewerbs in 1979, and Rondo: Piano Trio won the second prize at the Composition Competition of the West German Music Academy in 1981.[3]

Career

In 1982, he married Taiwanese soprano Lin Yu-Ching and returned to Taiwan to teach at the Department of Music of National Institute of the Arts (now renamed Taipei National University of the Arts). He has held various positions at school, including the dean of the Music College and dean of student affairs. In 2018, he was elected as an emeritus professor of the TNUA. In 1989, he founded the ISCM-Taiwan Section and served as the chairman for several terms of office. He was also selected as the chairman of the Asian Composers League, as well as the honorary Chairman of Asian Composers League - Taiwan National Committee and The Composers’ Association of Taiwan,[3] and organized the 29th Asian Composers League Conference and Festival, Taiwan.[7]

Music Composition

Philosophy of Composition

In 1995, Hwang-Long Pan published the article “The Concept of Sonic Imagery in Music Composition”.[8]. The first part discusses the Eastern aesthetic concept of “One Note, One World” through the idea of “Convergence of Notions”. The second part explores the compositional technique of “Expansion of the Motif” and its application in extending music textures. The third part delves into “The Manifesto of Spirit”, which aims to integrate the notions and compositional techniques discussed earlier[5]
