Hsu Ya-fen (born (1965-04-17)April 17, 1965) is a performer, singing composition designer, and director in Taiwanese opera. In 2003, she founded the Yafen Taiwanese Opera Troupe.

Biography

Born into a family of traditional opera, Hsu's ancestors were all Taiwanese opera performers. Her mother was the famous performer Hei Mao Yun in broadcast Taiwanese opera,[1][2] and her father was the versatile musician Guo Hung-hui.[3] She began her career in 1988, performing TV Taiwanese operas, and in 1991, she joined the Holo Taiwanese Opera Troupe to participate in modern Taiwanese opera theater productions. Driven by a sense of mission towards Taiwanese opera and a dedication to elevating the art form, Hsu founded the Yafen Taiwanese Opera Troupe in 2003, committed to preserving and innovating the art of Taiwanese opera.[4][5]

She has a multifaceted career in Taiwanese opera, including singing composition, direction, and acting.[4] In recent years, the productions by her troupe have received numerous acknowledgements, including a nomination for the Best Traditional Music Interpretation and winning the Best Traditional Opera Album at the 21st Golden Melody Awards in 2010 with Liang Chen Yu Tsao Shen (The Good Servant Meets the Kitchen God),[6] and a nomination for the Best Audiovisual Album at the 27th Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and music in 2016 with Qin Shi huangdi.[7][8]

Singing style

Hsu Ya-fen’s singing style includes the following features. Firstly, she incorporates semitones into her singing. This technique, originally used to prevent dry tones and maintain a relaxed singing style, has become Hsu’s feature. Secondly, Hsu employs “little falsetto” in higher notes to soften the tones. The variety of rhythms, including man-pan (slow rhythm), kuai-pan (fast rhythm), yao-pan (flexible rhythm), san-pan (loose rhythm), also allows Hsu to employ “dragging” techniques.[8]Lastly, in the performances of Yafen Taiwanese Opera Troupe, Hsu does not sing according to fixed sheet music, making every performance unique and keeping the feature of the improvisation from both the singing performers and the musicians.[8]
