Hilario Panerio Davide Sr. (December 20, 1904- June 17, 2006) was a Filipino educator, farmer, and philanthropist from Argao, Cebu.[1]
Davide is the father of Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. and Dr. Romulo Davide, both of whom received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2002 and 2012 respectively.[2][3] The family of Davide Sr. was awarded the ABS-CBN Bayaning Pamilyang Pilipino of the Year in 1997.[4]
Early life and career
Davide was born in Brgy. Colawin in Argao, Cebu, which is now a first-class municipality in Cebu. Davide was one of ten children to Pablo Ortega Davide, a municipal councilor and barangay captain and Teodora Panerio, both natives or Argao. Davide Growing up Davide was at time ignored during dance parties, and at one point heard a woman claim it was because he was from the mountains or taga-bukid.[5] Davide Sr. though lacking in funds vowed to ensure that all his children finished college. The children were disciplined from the beginning, and the boys had to learn how to gather tubo (sugarcane), while the girls learned house chores.No leisure was allowed until schoolwork and house chores were completed.<model/>
Davide was a teacher at the Talaga Elementary School in Argao in the 1920s when he met his future wife Josefa, also a teacher in the same school. Davide was later appointed as district school supervisor. One of his achievements during his stint was the construction of primary schools in the municipality. In fact, one of his first contributions to Colawin was the building of an elementary school, which would mean his children need not walk for miles to reach school. Davide also led the civilian guerillas during WWII. After the war, Davide continued managing the school district and retired in 1969 as school superintendent in Lapu-Lapu City. Shortly after, he founded the Colawin Education Foundation which he headed until 1990. He also became President of the Civil Affairs Committee, which restored the Hall of Justice in Argao[6]
Personal life
Because of the abundance of records in the local parish of Argao, Davide started to collect all records of the Davide family, particularly his line beginning the 18th century. One of the ancestors Francisco Modesto later adopted the name Modesto Davide after King David in 1849.[7][6] After Davide's children finished college, all became professionals and public servants: Jose became a lawyer and engineer, serving as Argao Municipal Councilor like his grandfather, Jorge became a soil scientist for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the eldest daughter Paz also became a public school teacher like her parents, Oscar became a surgeon at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, Romulo became a plant nematologist at UP Los Baños, the youngest daughter Lina earned a doctorate in Education and became an international training office director at an Illinois university, and Hilario Jr. or Jun, became Chief Justice of the Philippines|Chief Justice, a Constitutionalist, and chair of the Manila Bulletin.[8][5]
Davide died a day before Father's Day at the age of 102 from a congestive heart condition. His wake was held at Cosmopolitan Funeral Homes in Brgy. Lahug, one of the largest barangays in the region. In attendance were Archbishop Osbaldo Padilla, Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban and other public servants. The mass was presided by the papal nuncio of Papua New Guinea.[6]
